JVC's Micro HD Line: HA-FXD80/70/60

Just got charged a bomb through customs (mostly due to parcelforce's clearance fee that should be illegal), despite changing the package details on Tenso to gift and slightly lower cost to put it below the customs threshold. What were a cheap pair of headphones have turned into quite an expensive pair.

There aren't even reviews on these things and people are putting off buying the GR07 MKII? You will be sorely disappointed if you think these are within a shout of competing with the GR07. The GR07 has an unmistakable reference monitor sound. The GR07 has been out for a year and a half and still manages to stay on Page 1 in multiple threads. This topic is just a hype and hearsay just as the CKM500 was - better than average and popular only due to its predecessor and brand. Where is the FXT90 thread? It's gone.

There is no need to slag this off and suggest the GR07 is better if you have not heard it yet. I have not heard it so i can not say how it compares to the GR07. Yes i am not a hype fan at all but some people are liking it and some are not, thats all.

Part of the fun of this hobby is trying out new things. Who are you to say the GR07 is better to every single person, who have their own preferences?

So true about the angling and insertion depth of these IEMs, FlySweep. That's why a right-fitting tips is so important. It not only improves on the sound, but also hold these metal IEMs in your ears properly (not that they are heavy, but can be with the wrong size tips in your ears and can start pulling out on their own). Also I want to add that these aren't the original Auvio tips from like three years ago. I think Radio Shack found a new OEM because these tips are better, thicker and much more well constructed than the ones I have from a few years back (which weren't color coordinated either). Thanks again FlySweep!

ericp10,  I have to agree with the impressions of the Auvio tips.....I ran out and purchased some this morning....they stand head to head with what I am hearing on the FXD80 with the custom tips.  They give me slightly more bass than the custom tips, the custom tips have the slight edge with tone....I'm impressed with vocals, and details, not much difference in soundstage or separation with the Auvio tips either.  The bonus here is that the Auvio tips sound better on my RE272 than the custom tips, and they are more comfortable.

I could be happy with either the Auvio green, or my custom tips on the FXD80, but prefer the Auvio tips on the RE272!  These FXD80's continue to impress!

What the whole handling fee+vat scam they love?

Yup pita is sure is, i was very lucky with my fx80 and got through without so much as a charge, prolly would have stung a bit otherwise.

As for tips, i've ordered these.

Yup, 9 quid VAT and wait for it......... £13.50 parcelforce handling fee on top. I honestly don't know how they can get away with it. Either way I will threaten to take them to a small claims court after I've got my parcel in an attempt to get it charged back because it's friggin ridiculous.

Try using ems/jp post next time, these seem to slip past the net more often than most.

I did think it was £13.50 for handling, but the vat on top is very rich for what was a cheap iem.

Personally i wouldn't have picked them up, just to spite them.

They really hate having to send items back, costs them a lot more then.

It was EMS. Parcelforce/RM take over once it enters UK.

Well, not picking them up would cost me a lot more than 20 quid...

9 quid is 20% of £46. Pretty normal. You think the vat is more rich than the handling fee? over 100% interest over one day? lol?? Last time I paid the handling fee it was to RM not parcelforce and was £8. The fee is still £13.50 even if they pay £1000 for you. It's a complete joke. Cover their costs my ass, that's more expensive than paying for their whole shipping service across the UK involving airplane flights to get it there within 24 hours.

Yeh it is EMS parcel force which is a nightmare. I had some Dunus stuck in customs and got £20, yes more handling charge than VAT, so i did not pay and then i got £45 for my Ortafon EQ-5 which i did pay. EMS/Parcelforce are awful while FEDEX and other Couriers are great!

Also despite paying this afternoon, they can't deliver it until Friday, despite it sitting in their depot. Can't deliver it to my local post office until saturday. Can't have it delivered to my work address unless I pay £5.50 extra. So much for a premium service.

So jarrett, how long have you owned (heard) the FXD80 again? I think I missed it. And how many times did you A/B it against the GR07? I think I missed that in one of your posts too. Just curious.

cute I'm glad you like these tips. We owe a debt of gratitude to our friend FlySweep for finding out quickly how wonderful these tips work on the FXD80.

The FXD80 is definitely hyped, yes, but there are measurements that help explain the reason for it aside from the excellent price and sound it outputs.

True dat.
I'm actually interested in the FXD80 because I love my FXT90 to death... but still on the fence... there's still quite a lot of other IEM's that I would like to try...

The GR07 & 80 are a little difficult to directly A/B.  They aim for different signatures & purposes.  The GR07 strives for neutrality and stage monitor-friendliness.  The 80 isn't concerned with those qualities.  The 80's signature is tilted towards a more colored sound.  There are some technical aspects that can be compared.. like soundstage, dynamic range, cohesion, extension, clarity, transparency, timbre, etc.  And on all those points, I think the 80 stacks up very favorably (and in some cases, exceeding) the GR07.  I owned the GR07 for a long time & wrote about it often.  I still love and admire it greatly.. but when it comes to sheer immersiveness & enjoyment (which for me, personally, constitutes subjective AND objective qualities), the FXD80 pulls ahead.
