Sarah Jarosz:

"The Tourist"

"Shankill Butchers"

Candi Staton is underrated:

Also of the same ilk, is Randy Crawford, another underrated singer:

outrageously cheesy arrangement, but the voice... (damn good band, too):

...and this, from a previous generation of gifted black female vocalists, is beautiful: Nina Simone:

And Odetta's 'Hit or Miss' was used recently for a Southern Comfort advert:

I haven't heard it yet, and I've heard other people say this also. What's so bad about it?

The lead singer for The Jezabels is amazing for those of you who haven't heard them yet, look them up.

This thread is really fabulous! Thanks a lot, people! :D

My favorite female singers, as of now, are Alison Sudol, Hikaru Utada and Norah Jones. Some of the most soothing voices I've ever heard.

I haven't read through any of this thread. I'm not going to attempt to read through 82 pages.

However, the best female vocals I've heard are from "Norah Jones - Little Broken Hearts" released in 2012.

Absolutely stellar!

That's what the 'search' function was invented for...

Although she's not my cup of tea, stylistically, and thus not in my CD collection, it suddenly struck me that Shirley Bassey hasn't made it into this thread. Camp as hell and mad as cheese, but put that aside and consider the VOICE:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

(this is currently being used in a Natwest Bank advert on UK television)

...and since the above is a Bond theme tune, it's only fair to include Sheena Easton's Bond effort, even though she did not really achieve much success as a musical artist, in the grander scheme of things:

I like your taste!

I know Aoife's vocals from 'Crooked Still'

I also happen to like the song she sings first in that link - I know it because of another of my favourite singers - Alison Krauss.

Both lovely vocalists, with very different voices, although with a common aspect of 'breathy-ness'
