Best HD800 Amp
Aug 1, 2009 at 7:16 PM Post #151 of 654
Does anyone have any listening experience with the amps I own (Sugden Headmaster, Heed Canamp, Benchmark DAC1 built-in amp)?

I'm interested in the HD800 but not really looking to spend more on amps if possible. I recall the HD800 was teamed with the DAC1's amp when it was unveiled at the CES in January.

Unfortunately the HD800 is hardly available in the UK right now due to Senn making sure the CONUS market had priority. Hence, getting a demo here will be really difficult for a while so any input would be really useful.

Cheers....

i'll add that i recently listened to the HD800 balanced on the Phoenix and WA22. it sounded okay with the Phoenix. very nice with the WA22, but still not as good as when paired with the B52.

You dont happen to be able to compare the Phoenix and Wa22 sound with The Apache? (If you ever heard it ofc)

haven't listened to the 800 with the Apache. i think the WA22 at its price is pretty decent though. the Phoenix didn't sound great. maybe with other headphones it is better but with the 800, it was just okay. i also have a HR Balanced Home (maxxed), which sounds excellent with the 800. i thought the combo would merely sound good, but it sounds much better than that. have not listened to the 800 with an Apache, GSX, B22, BUDA + DPS, 307A, or Balancing Act. i have listened to the former 3 amps, but not with the 800.

For single ended, I think the isabellina hpa sounds really good. It helps to tame some of its treble and adds a little warmth and musicality to it.

I've only tried HD800 on 2 amps.. Lehmann Blackcube and DNA Sonett. Both of them paired well with HD800 but Sonett clearly made HD800 more musical. It made HD800's bass more prominent while retaining the original detail and tightness. Imaging also became much more three dimensional.. I don't know what term to refer it to but the music notes that used to be edgy and fatiguing became more soft and rounded while the impressive detail is still there. No wonder why they are aclaimed by some to be one of the best HD800 amp

I seriously thought about purchasing EAR HP4 but the price... ohhh it so expensive

I'm hoping that in near future, they will make similar amp with just single headphone output and hi/lo impedance switch. That might cure the price

I have a Headroom Balanced Max, and the HD800's sounds wonderful with it. No complaints whatsoever concerning sibilance or lack of bass. It's a great combo, seems they are made for each other.

I found the Phoenix to be best after I re-cabled my HD-800s. I can understand why someone would prefer a coloured amp over a dead neutral one with them, especially if one's source is the same.

I'm guessing the consensus here is that HD800 + Quality valve amp = Amazing.

Heh, good...

Who besides ipodpj claims it is one of the best amps for 800? Isn't yours up for sale in the FS forum? I'm surprised you would be selling if it is so good.

Im gonna get the HD 800 and an amp in 4 weeks, havent decided on the amp yet, but Im leaning to the DNA Sonett, I really prefered the sound of it over all the solidstates Ive heard so far. (rudiston, naim, grace, ear90, lavry DA11 built in amp) when I tried them out at the stockholm mini meet.
Though the hardest part seems to be picking the right DAC, I thought the Lavry DA11 DAC was nice, but I havent been able to compare it to anything else in the same price range or above.
