Speaking of portable amps, I currently use a portable to power my full size headphones. However there seems to be a lot of potential lost in the process. I'd definately suggest a full size amp if you don't want to compromise on the dynamics.

1.Basically in "layman's" terms, higher gain equates to higher volume. Usually harder to drive cans require higher gain to provide enough volume. This is just in simple terms. 2. Try on of those "livestrong" armbands or velcro, those seem to be the most common options.
