he's not producing anything now nor has he produced anything during past few years.. he did listened to it, but that was not the object of that thread.. it's purely about the presence and character of jitter on the outputs of commonly used USB chips and comparison with recovered S/PDIF from...

for those curious about USB and jitter, read quickly though this.. USB audio has some great potential, which is unfortunately never utilised in practice.. for the time being, USB audio is actually pretty *****..

    Sound Cards, SPDIF and cables

for different discs of different quality, the drive's servo has less or more work.. there are substantial peak current draws from the servo amps which can modulate supply rails for the rest of the player.. not to mention RF generated at the same time.. just stop thinking digital when we're...

A question to Head-Fi-ers not living in America

4 and we also have qwertz instead of qwerty (damn you, neighbours), I have to switch keyboards very often to access characters usually found on numeric keys.. I'm no longer using our national punctuated characters anymore, but I'm just too used to czech keyboard that I can't really use...

epion2985, you are thinking absolutely logically, but only within your current level of knowledge.. things, unfortunatelly, use to be much more complicated than they appear to be and believe me - this is just another proof of that.. you'd need to spend considerable amount of time investigating...

    Help flashing AV-710 to prodigy

the envy cards come with two crystals, one for 44.1 samplerates, which is always 512x44.1 and the other for 48kHz, which can be either 512x48 or 1024x48.. so you have to flash to a card which uses the same set of crystals, otherwise you get too slow or too fast playback of 48/96/192 material...

Samsung HD841 has 6ch DSD, just like Toshiba 4960 (which is the same thing), Pioneer DV-565A also (DV-563A is it's US version), the Denon also does DSD.. Samsung and presumably Toshiba also has some strange peak limiter employed all the time no matter you set in the menu.. Pioneer has...

    Question about MicroDAC RMAA Test

now everybody claiming USB is clearly superior to S/PDIF, look at those graphs! especially those claiming that some silly modified USB soundcards will beat the crap out of even the best transports in existence sorry, just couldn't resist..

$30 dvd player with optical out

the 'reclocking' feature of Monica is to be taken with a grain of salt.. this one does not recover proper clock, it just introduces somewhat predictable jitter of it's own.. can't comment on the actual sound results, but solely from the technical standpoint this is just nonsense.. it apperently...

$30 dvd player with optical out

no, there's no way to corrupt the actual data really.. the problem is those players use to attenuate in digital or even use limiters and none of this can be turned off, so the data are non-bitperfect even before they reach the output.. jitter is also non-issue if the receiving end is implemented...

    Question about MicroDAC RMAA Test

the USB connection only allows for 16bit at 32-48kHz samplerates, so the measured performance will indeed be limited by the 16bit precision, which is at most 98dB.. you should measure it using S/PDIF input instead.. also make sure the inputs are set to -10 in PatchMix session preferences..

yes, they'll sound bad and they do sound bad - compared to good transports.. the way you described the difference between your Philips and MiniMax when used as transports, that's it! now MiniMax probably isn't the ultimate transport either, so you can do even better.. at this point it's clearly...

it's not a question of working / not working, but how well it's working.. $30 DVD player plays CDs fine, but is that really what we want? also, when designing the adapter, there should be pads for ceramics.. then it's fairly ok, but I haven't seen any..

$30 dvd player with optical out

it's natural to them for many reasons.. clock is synthesised from 27M videoclock in a noisy video processor, there is considerable EMI which just passes out of the box through the cable, because there's usually no output transformer.. I'd expect the more expensive players to be cleaner from the...

jitter has little to do with disc spinning and also tales about toslink being inferior are way too much simplifying.. this will most likely have terrible digital output just as any other cheap DVD player..
