    Wh- what is this???

Hi folks, I'm in a bind here. I've got this headphone, see, and it looks just like a Stax 404, only I'm damn sure it isn't. Now maybe I've just been enjoying my St Patty's Day a bit too much, but I ain't been seeing no leprechauns yet, so I decided I better ask dem folks over at Head-fi if they...

    The Stax thread (New)

By popular demand I'm starting a new thread for our discussions on all things Stax and electrostatic due to the unwieldily number of pages of that thread. This thread should be looked on as a direct continuation of the previous thread. Keeping a broad scope with regards to subject matter has...

    Binaural microphones

Having recently aquired myself an equaliser, I've started thinking about getting myself a pair of binaural microphones to measure up my system and possibly make a few ghetto binaural recordings. Does anyone have any experiences with binaural headphones, or suggestions on which one to buy? I...

Stax updating their solid state amps

It was pretty much a given after the 212, 006t and 007t were upgraded that Stax would be following suit with their other amps, if nothing else for the sake of RoHS compliance. The first info of the version up has started to trickle in. Allegedly: 717->727A 313->323A 3030 system ->3050A...

    STAX 4070 GET! (+BIG PICS)

Well folks, it's been a long journey but they've finally arrived. Or as they'd say in Japan; They're here━━━━━━(゚∀゚)━━━━━━ッ!!! And, of course, here are the oh-so-obligitary pictures. Hope you're not reading this on dialup! There wasn't any warning this was coming when it did, so...

    Stax 580v to 230v adaptor

Hi everyone. You know how you can put a 5Mohm resistor into a HE60-Stax adaptor it'll drop the biasing voltage to 540 volts. Am I correct in thinking that if you used say a 45Mohm resister it'd drop the bias to 220v? Could we use this to make an adaptor cable to drive low bias Staxes off...

    The Stax thread

Well our discussions of all things Stax and electrostatic related seem to have died down recently, so in the interest of perking things back up a bit, here's a thread for it. Okay then, to start us off; compare and contrast:

So here I am listening to some Philips HP1000s...

I finally got around to actually getting Philips' HP1500 Dolby Headphone system, and decided to put the HP1000 headphones through their paces now that I have a decent understanding of what headphone Hi Fi sounds like. Given the price these things go for, I am completely stunned. Sure, they...

I think it's about time I built an amp. Help would be good.

I'm really not from an electronics background, and haven't clocked up a huge number of hours on the soldering iron, but having been into the science/art of good sound for a sufficiently long period, I think the time is ripe for me to start thinking about building my own amp. As an emotional...

Could someone please recable my Koss ESP950?

I really don't want to be stuck using a cable adaptor for these, so I'm wondering if anyone feels up to recabling them with either a Stax cable, or a DIY low-capacitance cable terminated in a Stax 5-pin plug. The stock cable isn't particularly good anyway. Any help would be most appriciated...

    So I'm thinking about getting a Stax 4070. What's everyone's thoughts?

Since getting the HE60s I have clocked up exactly 0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes, 0 seconds, and 0 milliseconds of listening time on my W5000s, and currently have no motivation to change this figure. This rather problematic as my living arrangements (and the fact that I enjoy blasting J-pop and...

It's been a long road, but finally... HE60

Well it took forever (actually less than a month) to get these back from Sennheiser, but they're finally here. What amazingly rich sound. What amazingly poor looks. Sound wise, I've never heard anything better. I'm forcing myself to start with my MP3s and work my way up so I can...

Arrg, my SA5000s are developing the infamous Y-connector problem

Title says it all. They're only four months old, so it's pretty annoying (typical Sony build quality, I guess). Can anyone give me good instructions on how to repair it? I'm worried I might break something perminantly if I crack the cable open without knowing what I'm doing. If someone has...

    Sony Electrets?

I saw these, and was curious. I never knew Sony made any electret headphones. Anyone know anything about them? Naturally the auction has nothing to do with me.

    Damn you HEV70!

I recently bought a HE60+HEV70 at auction, and just when the seller was about to ship them out to me he emailed me to tell me that apon inspection the HEV70s are broken and will need to ne sent off for repairs. It's almost like the HEV70s exist for the sole purpose of agrivating HE-60...

    W5000 vs SA5000

Yeah, battle of the 5000s... I've currently got a SA5k, and am intrigued by the new AT cans. Sounds like they might offer similar detail, neutrality, etc, but be more musical at the same time. Anyone with both these headphones able to compare them? Cheers!

Preamp, Dolby Headphone on the line-level output

Okay, here's what I'm looking for: A pre-amplifier (or prehaps a receiver) with Dolby Headphone, that outputs a DH processed signal over the line-level outputs, not just the headphone jack. From there I'll feed it into a nice headphone amp. All preamps and receivers I've tried have had...

My last mid-fi audio upgrade. Advice needed.

Hi everyone. Here's the situation; They've served me well for the last two years (-ish) of solid use, but the headphones in my Sony MDR-DS5100s are starting to wear out a bit now. I'm confronted with a number of choices on what to do next that I thought I'd throw it open to you to pitch in...
