Top end portable DAC/amp that can drive HD800

Hi all, it's been a while since I posted here so apologies if this is the wrong forum. What are the current options for a really good, really portable DAC/amp that can do justice to the HD800?

    ATTN: HE90 "Orpheus" owners

If you're using your HE90s with a KGSS/KGBH or Stax amp, you want to read this thread: http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showt...0&page=1&pp=20 It appears that a 5M resistor in series with the bias line is necessary to make them perform their best and avoid intermittent issues.

    Sennheiser Baby Orpheus: Unfinished Review

I wrote the following before I had to send the Baby Orpheus headphones back to Jatinder. As such, it's highly unbalanced -- far more is dedicated to the flaws of this headphone as should be in a proper review. In addition to taking it with a grain of salt, it can only be viewed as impressions of...

    Thermal imaging cameras

So I've decided I need a thermal imaging camera. No particular reason, they're just cool Any experiences with the Hughes Probeye analog imager, or ideas where I can find the Raytheon/Cadillac camera for cheap (<$1k)? I'm going to try some junkyards tomorrow, but given that the Cadillac is...

    Hell, a modern perspective

This isn't intended to be a discussion of religious issues. Don't. Ok, with that out of the way... for a class, we had an assignment to describe through creative writing our vision of Hell. Kind of like Dante's Inferno, except about 2-3 pages long. Well, I was having fun... and it ended up...

    LaRocco HeadCode DM impressions

Larry brought the LaRocco HeadCode DM over to my place. I probably spent about an hour listening to it... and boy was I impressed, even if I wasn't surprised. (LaRocco has consistently made the best sounding dynamic headphone amps I've ever heard, so this was pretty much par for the course)...

HE60 "Baby Orpheus" vs. HE90 "Big Daddy Orpheus" vs. Stax Omega 2 First Impressions

Last night, I finished a prototype HE60 to Stax adapter cable. At the moment, I have Jatinder's HE60s on loan. I also have a pair of HE90s, and a KGSS with both HE90 and Stax jacks -- and a pair of Omega 2s on perma-loan. The HE60 is much, much better than I expected it to be. I had...

    UIUC people: your opinion?

It seems like there are an awful lot of people from UIUC on Head-Fi... so I may as well ask your opinion of the place. (I'm doing the whole college process thing at the moment) Bonus points if you're an EE. How's life there? What's the good, the bad, the ugly? Do the surrounding cornfields...

My first TIG bead (of any length)

Last Monday, the postman delivered a ThermalArc 185TSW inverter with TIG and stick kits to my doorstep. I already had the consumables and argon waiting for it... but it took me until yesterday to get the 220V/38A power out to the garage. I mucked around a bit last night, and tonight I ran my...

GUN OWNERS: Trigger Locks Aren't Safe

http://www.security.org A friend of mine (and the owner of the aforementioned page) has figured out a way to open most trigger locks -- without damage -- and it's so simple an eleven year old can do it. Of course, if you're curious how it's done, the report is $3. (considering he's spent who...

    Head-Fi has gone sponsor crazy!

Wow. I remember when it was just HeadRoom and Meier Audio. I was a sponsor for awhile, too. Now we've even got a headphone company (!) sponsoring Head-Fi. Combined with the contributing members program... Jude may be able to afford to eat something besides top ramen every once in awhile

    Recommend me some computer upgrades

I'm upgrading in anticipation of Half-Life 2 That and I've got $1500 burning a hole in my pocket. (I wrote this 50 page security report, see...) Things I'd like to do: * Quietness. Really important! * 64-bit AMD. I don't necessarily *need* the 64-bit part, but the number is higher so it...

    Hello from the Caymans!

I'm typing this at Wayne's (thanks Wayne!)... anyway, I'm aware that my website (see the Audiogeek sponsor link above) is down at the moment and I won't be able to fix it until I return to Seattle. Similarly, because I don't have an internet connection beyond Wayne's laptop, please pardon my...

Those Kensington laptop locks aren't secure

http://www.security.org A security alert just came out. Turns out you can open them in about 30 seconds using a pair of scissors and a Bic pen -- and Kensington won't cover the stolen laptop, because the lock wasn't physically damaged in the process. Your Laptop: Gone in 30 Seconds...

    Linux server weirdness

My Debian Linux server's hard drive is always full. I noticed this occurring since this weekend; since I was able to successfully run an apt-get dist-upgrade late last week, I'm guessing that it started happening recently. I cleared a few megs of space; a few days later, it's full again...

Got a new source at a surplus auction

Last Saturday, I participated in the University of Washington Surplus Property auction.
