SEATTLE MEET @ FRONT PANEL EXPRESS 1/21/2012
So sad that I missed this - looked like a lot of great gear and a great location! I couldn't get out until later Saturday night - my road was closed both directions due to down lines leaving me in Issaquah, my gear in Redmond, and one cold headphone junkie :( I hope there's another chance this... -
SEATTLE MEET @ FRONT PANEL EXPRESS 1/21/2012
Excellent, I've been hoping to try out a HiFace! I should have another hi res source lined up. Oppo DV970 as a transport for SACD feeding 24/88.2k PCM over SPDIF. That will let us try different DACs with the same SACD source. I wish I had a transport outputting 24/176 instead, but 24/88...- patricklang

SEATTLE MEET @ FRONT PANEL EXPRESS 1/21/2012
I appreciate the offer - but I'm looking for USB -> SPDIF, rather than USB -> analog. I'm trying to work around the Emotiva's lack of 24/96k support over USB so that I can do blind A-B tests between the Emotiva and other contenders such as your NuForce and hopefully a Schiit Bifrost DAC. I...- patricklang

SEATTLE MEET @ FRONT PANEL EXPRESS 1/21/2012
Hmm - bad news. It turns out the E-mu 0404 USB I was planning to use still doesn't work right in Win7. SPDIF is DOA, only analog outputs work, and E-mu/Creative aren't releasing any driver updates to make it work. Does anyone have a 24/96k capable USB interface I could borrow to use with the...- patricklang

SEATTLE MEET @ FRONT PANEL EXPRESS 1/21/2012
Quote: Are you bringing the Lavry? It's been a while since I have heard one and I'm hoping to hear it again. I was lucky enough to A/B the DA10 and Benchmark DAC-1 a few years ago with my own cans & amp (AKG k501 + Meta42). The DA10 is still the best DAC for my tastes - clean and...- patricklang

SEATTLE MEET @ FRONT PANEL EXPRESS 1/21/2012
Wow, funny coincidence. I haven't been posting in a while, but came across this while searching for some Front Panel Express designs for my latest project. I'd love to attend, it's been a while since I've been to a meet and have some gear I'd like to share. My main focus is on bang/buck, and...- patricklang

Newbie to high end audio
I think you should be sure to try these: Sennheiser HD595 - most aggressive sounding Sennheiser headphone. Slightly warm, brighter treble than the HD580/600/650 AKG k271 - I'd argue they're flatter than the DT770, and maybe a bit better in the treble. I listened to them A-B with the DT770 and...- patricklang

Emu 0404 PCI - AC3 passthrough?
I wasn't able to get AC3 from the E-mu 0404 PCI with Vista X64 and their beta drivers. Control panel only listed stereo as supported output. Do you need optical or coax SPDIF?- patricklang

Good cheap soundcard for music listening?
Wow, good timing. I've been testing a variety of cards on Vista X64 since before beta shipped, and now I'm testing them on Win7 as well. I have most of the cards on this thread. E-Mu 0404 PCI - best sound quality (unmodded) that I have had in a PCI card when it works. Bass is well controlled...- patricklang

Zune 2.5 Update
Nope, no alarm, no clock functions. When the Zune is not in use, it goes into sleep (remembers last track & menu positions) after a few minutes. Waking from sleep is almost instant. It goes into a deep sleep/hibernate after some hours (forgets track positions). Waking from hibernate shows...- patricklang

Anyone using Windows Vista?
Wow, major thread crapping going on here. If you have questions about Linux or *BSD, it would be best to start another thread and also check other forums. So back on the topic of Vista & audio. I still have not found a working driver for my Revolution 7.1. You'll see the same thing mirrored...- patricklang

Portable Audio in the Workplace
E-Mu 0404, Meta42 w/ my custom power & stacked buffers, AKG k501/271. I copy my entire lossless collection to a 400 gig usb drive. Not exactly portable, but I listen at work a lot more than home since I'm in software development.- patricklang

Windows Vista will be better for audiophiles?
EMI 2|6 eh? How do those sound? That might be what I need right now so I can switch to Vista instead of dual-boot. A quick search on eBay puts them at <$100- patricklang

Windows Vista will be better for audiophiles?
I have had good results with USB devices (iMic) using the built-in drivers. The per-application volume settings are nice, I can keep my music at 100% so its essentially bit-perfect, but then listen to voicemail at a lower volume at the same time, etc. It's a good pipeline, no complaints with it...- patricklang

MacBook or MacBook Pro?
40% Office and 10% Photoshop? If I were you, I would either: - Wait for native Intel versions of your apps (2007?) - Buy a refurb G4 if you can't wait Otherwise 50% of the time you'll be wishing you were on a G4/G5. Rosetta is a memory hog, running multiple applications under rosetta will...- patricklang

Need to build a small speaker amp
Check out the most recent Parts Express speaker building project from their flyer: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage....WebPage_ID=341 It's a iPod jambox, could be adapted for indoor use. They chose a T-Amp powered off a 12v sealed lead-acid for several hours of power outdoors.- patricklang

got a sansa e140 today
No comments on E1xx sound quality yet? I'm considering the same player since I already have some high speed SD cards, and the AAA battery makes it great for travelling light, no chargers required.- patricklang

Mid-level IEM recomendation wanted
I started out on V6's as well. I haven't heard the E4c, but the Etymotics ER-4S with an amp sound the closest to a speaker listening experience that I've ever heard. They sound like a well-tuned recording studio monitor setup. Also, since you like the 7506 - if you are looking for an...- patricklang

DT880 or akg501 for classical?
I would find it very hard to justify the cost of the DT880 over the K501. The last time I listened to both was about a year ago, and on a variety of styles, including classical, the difference was not that big. I still swear the dt880 has a slightly metallic sound that I don't hear in the k501...- patricklang

Sound card with optical in and out for Linux and Windows
The Dio2496 works with Alsa. It is not very common, but I have spoken to people using the Dio2496 along with an ART DI/O for the DAC on Linux. It is discontinued, but easily found on eBay. As another poster mentioned, the M-Audio Audiophile PCI is the same chipset, and has coax digital in/out...- patricklang
