ZMF Ori (Omni) - Upcoming Semi Open Flagship

any sonic differences?

I got to hear the new pads while I was paying zach915m a visit the other week and I can safely say they are my favorite ZMF pads by far. They feel more neutral, more open and sounds are delivered in a way that just seems more effortless. Not as dark sounding as the other pads but IIRC, bass hits as hard or harder because the ear is slightly closer to the driver. Biggest improvement, IMO, was the vocals - particularly female vocals, which hit me with a powerful wave of emotion that I didn't quite feel with the other pads. There is just a little more presence and openness in the upper midrange which allows some harmonic content to come forth.

Comfort was also the best of any of the pads, IMHO, because the new pads breathe a little better than any of the other options and they are a bit softer too. Comfort is always subjective, but for my tastes, it was a big improvement.

Anyway, I was really, really impressed across the board with the new ZMF pads - I'd like to hear them on some of my various Denons, Fostex and HFM models too, because I felt like they were in a nice sweet spot in regard to both comfort and sound. IMHO, YMMV, etc.

Hey guys, I just put my Cocobolo Omni up for sale here, in case anyone is interested! Love the way they look and they sound great, but they're just not quite the sound signature I was going for. After several hours of listening and much deliberation over the past couple of weeks, I've decided to pass them on so that someone else can enjoy Zach's fine work!

  Nice! I'd be curious what's your preferences.

Straight off the bat:

Cocobolo has more sub-bass and an overall cleaner (leaner?) sound to it.

Cherry has more soundstage and a magical lower-mid presence (and bloom) that gives acoustic guitars a very realistic reproduction. The cocobolo misses out on that a bit.

Cocobolo also weighs more, but not by an extreme amount.

Looks wise, cocobolo wins in my eyes. These are some better photos taken by the person I bought this from.

Both have their strengths and this is going to be an interesting comparison video for me to film. Cheers to Zach and his ability to utilize such beautiful tonewood in his work.

  Have both the Cocobolo and the Cherry now, time for comparisons.

I think that set is pretty new, could probably still use some more burn in too.  150 hrs + usually lets it settle in nicely.

It is! June 23rd according to the card. Balanced cable that I'm using with my Liquid Carbon.

The pilot pad feels different than my other two. The top is smoother, silkier, and the overall thickness is thinner but still comfortable. Did you give him one of the new lambskin pilot pads? The width of the lambskin and cowhide pads used are a bit thinner too compared to the ones I've had since April.

Yeah it's probably a lambskin pilot pad.  If it's only 3 weeks old than it probably does need some burn in.

Not sure about the other earpads, they may appear thinner if they haven't been applied/worn for a while possibly?

Yeah. I can tell the previous owner didn't use the cowhide pads at all, I'm breaking them in now to bring them to the level of the one on the cherry.

An Omni - sent out today to it's new owner.  Padauk certainly sounds as glorious as it looks.

Also - you can't see them very well in this picture, but Omni pads are in, all pad orders were fulfilled today and all Omni shipments will have Omni pads on them by default.

@Zach

What's my pilot pad? It's pretty comfy :)

@Aornic

What do you use as a source for the LC? I'm waiting for my unit in September.
I bet it sounds wonderful with the Omni. How about the cocobolo? I have that bad boy :)

Zach will recommend the Metrum Musette.  I'm not sure why....

Actually, so would I.  Its a great match to the LC.  Hopefully soon I'll be adding an Omni for myself as well....
