Thanks for the reccomendations! Yeah the RCA rectifier is just a bit too sluggish and muffled sounding, but I do like the effect it has on staging. Nice switch-up for 4 dollars when I'm feeling it haha. I gotta just pony up and spend some more for the input and output tubes but I'm finding it hard to drop the cash immediately when I enjoy the stock tubes just fine. That’s same tube I tried. Think also got for under 10. I didn’t care for it. I like stock better but also have NOS Millard GZ34 Daystrom that sounds like a refined stock tube with improvements in all the right directions. Tighter bass, more control, refined treble. Very similar soundstage, which I like. The RCA brown base is interesting but doesn’t sound like hifi. Just something about it I didn’t like. Maybe it loss of focus.
I did spend a little cash for the input tubes for RCA 5691 red base since there seemed to be general consensus and wasn’t too expensive. But having trouble spending over $200 for a set of tubes I may not like. Think might just stick with that Millard as my rectifier and focus on output tubes. Have stock and $12 Tung Sol, they sound very close but stock seems a little bright and less refined.

Read somewhere that can try the different type of tubes first for cheap and see if moves you in right direction and then eventually move up to better quality. Thanks for the reccomendations! As I was looking thru past posts I’m kind of worried about having a mismatch with my rectifier and output tube. Have GZ34 rectifier and 6F6G outputs. Saw something about bias mismatch. Should I be worried? What output tubes recommended for GZ34? Have 6L6 coming and was looking at KT-66.

@Nick76 @iamoneagain Don’t give up on RCA rectifiers just yet. It looks like both of you got one of the later versions with the single D getter. I have tried those, but I much prefer the 1940’s double D getter version. They are more refined and have a more expansive soundstage.

Check the tube compatibility spreadsheet on the third post of this thread. It’s super-helpful!Read somewhere that can try the different type of tubes first for cheap and see if moves you in right direction and then eventually move up to better quality.

Maybe the RCA Rectifier you got sags more than the version that @ckhirnigs113 has. Just need to find the input and output tube that really synergizes with it

Yeah, my tubes were incompatible. Luckily nothing happened yet and output tubes were cheap. Other cheap set I have coming should work. That sheet is a big help and printed out a copy. Figured I’d end up doing something wrong buying NOS tubes.Check the tube compatibility spreadsheet on the third post of this thread. It’s super-helpful!
Any recommendations on output tubes under $300 for the pair.

If you stick with the GZ34 rectifier, some popular choices would be Mullard EL38’s (require adapters) and Tung Sol 6550’s. I really like Ei KT90’s as well. If you get something like a 5R4GY or 5U4G, you can get some lower-powered output tubes like EL84/6BQ5’s and 6V6’s.Yeah, my tubes were incompatible. Yeah, the GZ34 with the KT90s are an excellent combo. If you stick with the GZ34 rectifier, some popular choices would be Mullard EL38’s (require adapters) and Tung Sol 6550’s. I haven't had the chance to try it with the Tung-Sol 6550. I got distracted testing the GZ32.

In addition to the EL38, both the La Radio Technique EL39 & Most/All 807/VT60a tubes can be had for £150 or less a pair (NOS). They both require adapters but will still fall well under the $300.Any recommendations on output tubes under $300 for the pair.
Is KT90 somewhat similar to KT88?Yeah, the GZ34 with the KT90s are an excellent combo.

KT90 for me is closer to KT66s in sound than KT88. It stands somewhere between the two in sound signature where KT66 is mid and bass emphasized and KT88 has more clarity and holographic presentation.
You can adjust that shift between the two sound signature by changing out the different rectifiers. Lower voltage rectifier will be more clear while higher voltage is more fullness in sound. ( different manufacturers can change the sounds too so it’s not a set rule).
