Zero Audio - ZH-DX200 Carbo Tenore | ZH-DX210 Carbo Basso (Carbon & Aluminium IEM) thread

Just picked up my Doppio. Not optimal listening right now, because I left the X3 at home, as well as the tips, so I'm doing initial listening on my iPhone with the included tips. No burn in. First impression is bass is non-existent with sibilance in the highs. Airy presentation though, with forward mids and lots of detail. I'll check back in as soon as I give them the proper tips, source, and EDM burn in.

Yup, less volume in the back=less bass
less volume in the front=less treble

Rin demostrated this in his 9927 and MH1 mods.

Could be a likely candidate for the wide sound variations between models.

James, you said that was you bassier pair right? If I open up my bass-light pair, there should be less foam, and Inks' theory could have some support.

This sound plausible.  So, more foam means less room?  Or the positioning of the driver relative to the housing not being consistant.

Though I'm sure Mo' will chime in with confirmation that bass gets better after 200hrs, I gave up after 50hrs.  You will get bass (quality rather than quantity), and highs will settle down a bit.  But in general it will remain a revealing pair of phones, and I didn't hear any drastic changes after 50hrs of burn in.  Kind of similar to dual BA driver IM02, though IM02 had relatively more bass and smother highs.  I guess we will have to wait for Treppio to hear triple BA with some quality bass, or maybe Hyppio for some hybrid with a low end of dynamic driver

I believe you. The bass has come up a bit, it's accurate and rounded, and the highs are settling, but I think you'll be right on with the sound as it's completely settles. I bought a new pair of Tenore, so I will use those as my on the go's. These are nice with details, but they synergize better with my Sony Z and my E6 than they do the X3. I think the highs are warmer and more controlled on the Sony? Don't think I'll sell them, but my TF10's, CKW1000, UERM and IE800 were better from a technical and fun factor POV, but these fit best. Fit is amazing.

anyone know how these stack up to re-400s?

Funny you should mention this.

I just picked up a pair or RE-400's and a pair of Tenore's today on my local audio classifieds. I also believe I received a pair of reference Tenore's, because there is a definitely a lack of bass compared to the RE-400's.

The Tenores are MUCH MORE ACCURATE than the RE-400's. I was listening to Adele - Lovesong and HOLY CRAP, the instrument separation and soundstage? blow the RE-400's out of the water. The Tenore's are much more neutral than the RE-400's though and aren't nearly as fun, but the RE-400's seem very warm to the point that it muffles instruments and even voices to an extent (especially in Adele - Lovesong). Mid bass is much better on the RE-400's I find.

I've only put about 2 hours on the RE-400's and about 30 minutes on the Tenore's though. If accuracy, clarity and instrument separation is your thing, the Tenore's are definitely your best bet. I have alot more listening to do. I do like the warmth of the RE-400's, but I am going to listen to some different music including classical to compare soon and I'm sure the Tenore's are going to kick arse for this.

Also it seems the Tenore's are a little harder to drive. Not much, but a little.

Honestly, if you can put the accuracy, instrument separation and detail from the Tenore's with the mid bass, bass extension and a little warmth from the RE-400's into one package, I would sell my soul to the devil to own a pair.

I'm so confused because I want to 24/7 the Tenore's because of the clarity, but it's just not quite as fun as the RE-400's.. I am torn....

Oh and KC06's are on the way. May grab a pair of GR07's to compare also from the same guy I bought the RE-400's and Tenore's from.

Have you tried the kc06/kc06a's? Fun good times :)

I agree with most of your observation. So much so I purchased another pair of Tenore, because I love the sound so much. The RE-400 have a very weird treble. It's timbre is not as accurate as the Tenore, and tend to be artificially extended. Like HiFiMan are still trying to live off the legacy of the RE-0, and to a lesser extend the RE-ZERO. Didn't like either of those IEM's either. Dry and boring bass with splashy highs.

I have alot of listening to do still and my audio understanding and nomenclature are lacking severely. All I know is the Tenore's detail is amazing and I wish the RE-400's possessed it. It seems I will be swapping back and forth between the two until the end of time for different music genres until I can find one pair that can do both. :D

According to Rin Choi in his MH1 mod, reducing the rear housing volume increase the cut-off frequency, meaning more foam would reduce bass level, but start also at higher frequency.

EDM burn in? I am looking to do a burn in on my Tenores and RE-400's. What do you recommend for music and at what volume?

Do yourself a favor a get this :

Gridlok - Break The System (2007)

It's perfect for burn in. Absolutely the bass, drums, frequencies, and sweeps needed to burn in a good pair of IEMs. I go 80-90% volume, and this has always been safe.

Are you referring to the whole album or just the one song called Break The System. How many hours do you burn in at a time?
