Because if I didnt limit it then people would be composing bands of unrealistic size. But if I limit to 4 then I know people will go over only by a bit. Its just a guideline, I really dont care if you have 6 people in your band or even 3. I just didnt want people listing off all of their favorite drummers, bassists, guitarists, and vocalists.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know Neil rules (been a HUGE Rush fan since Moving Pictures came out), but Mike Portnoy is a PHENOMONAL drummer. I'd dare say that he can hold is own against "The Professor" in most ways. They're both brilliant drummers, though.

Neil is precise, technical, and Mike is fast and bombastic, while still being precise. Check out his drumming on Neil Morse's cd ONE, the track "Author of Confusion" It rocks.

Pooh, that is kinda Hippie thread until now...

My perfect band would be something slowish, ambientish & minimalistic music completely without guitars and other rock&roll stuff, lots of analogue synthies, some jazz imfluences and a singer with deeeep voice (only on some pieces, rest should be instrumental). All members should have been former students of arts, architecture or music, none a former lorry driver from L.A. Foundation of that music should be "British to the bones", thus opposite extreme to that conventional rocking "California" feeling.

That might be "tamed" Future Sound of London together with David Sylvian on vocals and Eberhard Weber as guest playing bass. Maybe some interspersed 3 min stand-alone cello pieces performed by Gyða (from island band Mùm)

Guess I will get trouble now.

Ok, I have four picks for vocals so they would alternate depending on song and style:

Brad from Sublime and Kenny Chesney (doing a country reggae thing)
Maynard from TOOL and Melissa Kaplan from Splashdown doing the rock/metal thing

Bass: Less Claypool (Primus)
Drums: Danny Carey (TOOL)
Guitar: Tom Morrello (Rage)
