Your Top 10 Hip-Hop Albums:
Oct 29, 2005 at 3:11 AM Post #16 of 49
this has definitely been answered many times in the Headphones forum.

Do an advanced search for hiphop, under that subforum, and you'll get tons of recs. http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/search.php?

It depends what you want to hear from the music, and what other genres you listen to as well.

the Beyer DT770 are major bass phones, but others work with hiphop as well, including grados and senns (e.g. the 650s, which I am using at this very moment, which are putting out some delicious bass on Krush's Milight). it really all depends what you have to drive them and what kinds of sounds you like.

Man, all good choices so far. I can only add Hieroglyphics - 3rd Eye Vision.

edit: woops! Well, I second the nomination at least.

I just realized after reading these posts, that I forgot about the one album that probably influenced me the most:
Cypress Hill-"Black Sunday"
Havent listened to it in years, and "**** the Hammer" is pumping through my headphones right now-what a classic!

These are time tested classics, each standing up to the challenge of later rivals and beyond.

Top 10 - in no particular order

Public Enemy: It takes a nation of millions to hold us back
- Great impact, great lyrics, in your face.

De La Soul: Three feet high and rising
- Against the grain at the time. New sound into the mainstream

Eric B & Rakim: Paid in Full
- Listening to Rakim even today... younger boys need to take take a 101 on what is flow.

Beastie Boys: Paul's Boutique
- What can I say? Totally under-appreciated. Smooth.

Digable Planets: Reachin'
- Again, listening to Butterfly is like magic. Very personal sound again.

NWA: Straight outta Compton
- Practically propelled a genre into the limelight. Raw.

Run DMC: Raising Hell
- Their best, imho. Very influential.

Dr Dre: The Chronic
- One of the best produced of all time. Really put p back into phunk.

MC Solaar: Qui Seme le Vent Recolte le Tempo
- Because not all great rap comes out of the English speaking community (or USA for that matter)

Top 10 is hard, because I had to leave a lot out (BIG, Nas, Wu Tang, lots of UG stuff, the granfathers, etc.). On another day I might have compiled a totally different list, but that's because there are so many good top 10 contenders.

Personally I'm really saddened by rap for several years now. At least the mainstream. None of it really pushes any new boundaries, is great in it's delivery or production. Maybe I'm just getting old

I grew up on De La, Tribe, Leaders of the New School.
