I use the following on the iPod:
ALAC (mostly out of laziness)
224 VBR QT/iTunes AAC
-APS LAME MP3

Favorite on portable would be 224.

ALAC, cuz it's convenient, and I can use it on both my ipod and ihp-120.

I'd have to go with Variable Bitrate (VBR) mp3's. They play on almost anything nowadays and sound as good as anything I've heard if they use lower compression, like I prefer. They store and transfer easily as well, and I can't really tell the difference between a well done VBR mp3 and a lossless track like WAV, but I would like to run FLAC soon and do comparisons with my Karma.

Most of my stuff is in q4 Vorbis as I used to rip it; I can't re-rip as the CDs are all stuck back in England. Stuff I have here in Canada is ripped to FLAC on my PC then q6 or q8 Vorbis on my Neuros (thanks to the nifty flac2ogg script I found).
