I did download QCD and will give it a try. Can I believe it when it says no spyware?

Revan

yes. it is completely spyware free.

why on earth would you infect my thread with musicmatch!!

worst player ever.

QCD will not ask you to library all your mp3s like you mentioned. its actually a very clean and easy interface. with an empty player click on the play button to add files. if you have songs in the playlist already you can right click the play button to continue adding.

QCD uses about 6.5mb-7.5 depending on what source you are playing from.

My Winamp uses 5.75mb, then it gets bigger when there is file being played.

so virtually the same then. when you have people running systems with 256mb and becoming more popular.. 512mb 1-2mb difference is minute.

edit: wow. just for kicks i checked it while playing the alizée album in mp3 form i've been listening to and it only was using 4.3mb while playing an encoded mp3.

very nice.

read this on MAD webpage:

"High-resolution output also depends on support from your Winamp output plug-in. At this time, 24-bit output is reported to work with Nullsoft's waveOut plug-in if the "Max blocksize" and "Min blocksize" configuration parameters are set to 16kB and 4kB respectively.

24-bit output is not reported to work with the DirectSound plug-in."

Does it mean I have now go back to the old output plugin and forget about resampling?

no they are just reffering to the stock DirectSound plugin not the 3rd party one w/ SSRC

For audio: I use Winamp 2.81. I don't like Winamp3...
For video: Windows Media Player 6.4. Very simple and it works perfectly.

I hate WMP 7, it's like the old realplayer which I can't stand, and for god's sake do NOT download WMP 9...you can't uninstall it and it's totally @#$%ing with my system and other players. Eeeevilll.....

I tried the quientessential player, and I like it more than winamp. Sound quality is just a little bit crisper and clearer.

Not a huge earth shattering difference, though.

i find the largest difference in the midrange to midbass where the QCD player just outclasses winamp with warmth.

right now i'm listening to:
winamp 2.81 (with security fix): mad input plugin + wave output plugin with ssrc upsampling to 96khz -> msb link iii dac -> meta42 -> rs-1 with modded flat pads

and boy does it sound wonderful. the foobar2000 one is pretty hip too, but i like my funky winamp plugin so i can post in my aim profile which mp3 i'm listening to now. foobar looks like it'll be a a hefty force in the computer audio scene soon though. i really like it, just wish it had a way to display the filename in the playlist, not all of that id3 viewing crap. (%7 for life!)

I'll give this a try.

I usually use Winamp 2.81 + Mad and also Cool Player Build 205 (coolplayer.sourceforge.net). Cool Player sounds slightly better, but I can't give up my global hotkeys from Winamp.

Ah well, we'll see how this one turns out.

remember you can use your winamp plugins in QCD so you won't lose your global hotkeys.

Yeah, I saw that. I'll give that a try after I've finished auditioning the player. So far, so good, though. Thanks for heads up on QCD ;D

So far I've not been able to get any hotkey plugins to work.

gloco, I've noticed on quintessential's site that there is an .APE plugin.

Since I didn't mention this earlier and others mentioned their choices, for video playing I generally use mplay32.exe found in the system or system32 folder (depending on which OS you are using). It's compact and convenient.

you might contact quinn about the hotkey plugin. he might be able to rework it to get it to function.

or there might be a similar one on the QCD page.

Thanks for the advice. I found a hotkey plugin on the quinnware site that works.

On sound quality: I like the sound of QCD better for some but less for others. I'll use it as my main player for a week and see what happens.
