Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert

This album has been on my vinyl wishlist ever since I got my turntable. Due to being too lazy to order it through my local record store, it took me until I saw a copy on the shelf yesterday before I finally acquired this divine recording on vinyl. If you are somehow not familiar with this recording which I believe I've heard referred to as the best-selling solo piano record of all time, you should go check it out – and I mean now. Completely improvised on the spot with nothing planned in advance, played on a bad piano which high and low octaves were unusable, this concert stands in my mind as one of the absolute best-sounding recordings of all time as well as one of the most essential albums any person could have in their record collection. Spontaneous, but incredibly accessible, The Köln Concert is something truly special, magical. For further listening, check out Jarrett's Sun Bear Concerts box set – it contains five similar concerts recorded in Japan the following year. The performances there are even more extended, with more variety, less focus on pure melody, and considerably more depth meaning they require more concentration and effort from the listener but are also very rewarding if you do put in the time and effort.

Burzum - From the Depths of Darkness [CD]

I already had this on colored vinyl, but this was the last Burzum CD missing from my CD collection aside from a couple of compilations I have no interest in. Even this one is a compilation, but since it contains re-recordings of selected songs from the first two Burzum albums I deemed it an acceptable inclusion into the Burzum catalog. The mastering on the CD is – like on all of Burzum's new non-ambient, non-reissue CDs – atrocious. Recommended only if you don't have a turntable, otherwise you should definitely go for the vinyl. It's been a long time since I've heard a more amateurish mastering job on a commercial release, it's that bad – honestly a joke.

Echo and the Bunnymen 'Heaven Up Here' 1981

-That is one of the greatest early eighties albums there is.

Reminds me I'd better take it out for a spin tonight. (I can leave them alone for months - but whenever I listen to Cocteau Twins, I end up digging out a couple of Echo & The Bunnymen albums afterwards.

Listened to Heaven or Las Vegas biking to work this morning. Sunrise, Elizabeth Fraser's voice, a good work-out - bliss...

Benjamin Booker - Benjamin Booker
Earth - Primitive and Deadly
Avi Buffalo - At Best Cuckold
The John Steel Singers - Everything's A Thread
Aaron Freeman - Freeman

...all from MOJO's 'Best 20 albums (Q3 2014)'. I have found that MOJO's recommendations often turns me onto artists and even genres I didn't know I liked - so I tend to give a number of their recommended albums a listen on Spotify, then buy the ones I really like - or think I may like after listening to them a few times; I have come to recognize (most of the time!) what music will grow on me, and what is just... meh, for lack of a better word. :)
