I had Contact in my top dozen, but it didn't make the final cut of 10. The book and the movie are both really good, but very different from each other. The book starts out in typical Sagan fashion, but the story really takes off in the second half.

Dune - Frank Herbert
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
Empire - Orson Scott Card
State Of Fear - Michael Crichton
Jurassic Park - Michael Crichton
Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson
Contact - Carl Sagan
The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy - Douglas Adams
Tales of The Otori - Lian Hearn
Battle Royale - Koushun Takami

Making this list was hard enough - I think roughly 85% of my entire collection of books (my main collection, secondary collection in storage, tertiary collection still left behind in India, and my e-book collection is all science fiction and fantasy.

NPR Books is running a poll for the top-100 science-fiction/fantasy books (no registration required) and you get to vote for your top ten.  There are lots of readers and sci-fi/fantasy fans here, so vote and post your lists!  And feel free to comment on what was left off the list or what shouldn't be on there.  :D

Here are my choices:

Animal Farm, by George Orwell
Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley
Cat's Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut
Cryptonomicon, by Neal Stephenson
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury
The Foundation Trilogy, by Isaac Asimov
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, by Douglas Adams
The Illuminatus! Trilogy, by Robert Shea & Robert Anton Wilson
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, by J.R.R. Tolkien
Ubik, by Philip K. Dick

I would have liked a few more votes and didn't nominate any author more than once.  I've read and loved multiple books by each of these authors, though.

Also, I'm not happy that H.P. Lovecraft missed the list.  Maybe he got grouped into horror, but then again, Stephen King made the list.

Read this - Stanislaw Lem "The Cyberiad".

I'm very sad to report that I've read a crapload of science fiction/fantasy in my youth, even after college, yet I can neither remember nor discuss even one title.  Lots of Aasimov, Adams, Stephenson, Donaldson, Tolkien, and people who write shorter books than these.

Sadder still is I can't be bothered to again read something as engrossing and intellectually stimulating at my (not even old) age.  I blame lots of factors, many internal, some external.  I'm gonna go with pop culture drugs refined sugars parenthood though.

I havent read consistenly since the 1990s. Some of my favorites are-

Red Beard- Sci fi story about a mutant in reverse.

The Damnation Game by Clive Barker

The Cabal by Cliver Barker which was made into the movie NIGHTBREED.

Elric Of Melnibone by Michael Moorcock

The Compleat Bolo by Keith Laumer- pretty cool series about intelligent mountain size war tanks defending the human race to the point where humans feel threatened by them. Think Terminators that were never evil as giant tanks with godlike calculation and logic with a watching over everything father presence.
