Yamaha YH-5000SE — a flagship from an orthodynamic headphones veteran!

@voja I wholeheartedly support your enthusiasm on Yamaha future release of YH-5000.
However, you should remember that Pioneer which I consider also a big name in audio history, has undeniably failed to capture target audience with their release of Master 1 headphones.
Not to put your hopes down, but to stay more grounded. It might be a fail, it might be a success. Like you said, we will wait and see.

You know Marshall makes really good guitar amps
Where is the JCM800 v2?

Special Marshall amps go to 11/10.

We westerners have big ears, big heads, big ball.....

Medicine in Japan is quite mild, to the point, it really does nothing for a big boy westerner, been there node that.

Will this be a problem with our Alien like Cone-Heads, fluffy full of mucus Shrek ears ?

The horror when they see me pull out that cotton swab, out my ear, yellow alien ecto-plasma on a stick.

Maybe the build/sound will be to shall I say, modest and petite for our King Kong Craniums ?

Having owned Yamaha motorcycles, I'm a fanboy.

Blah blah spinal tap blah blah I'm also super hyped for the release. But they could have done better price wise

And you went to college for $500, and bought a house for $2000. What's your point?
And a new album was $6, today it’s $14. And a $2000 house in ‘77 was a shed. Get your facts straight.

Well… they looks great! $2K yes! $3K maybe. $4K doubtful. $5K no way!

50mm drivers, 5K: maths at work, they like round figures that's all.
Ha… my TH900mk2 has 50mm drivers, and my MDR-Z1R has 70mm. It’s a good thing Fostex and Sony don’t use the same math.

I'm very interested in this headphone, even at this price, but I don't see a need at the moment to either defend or attack Yamaha for the price they've chosen. They have just set the expectations and the competition for their new product. At $5000, they're in the realm of the LCD-5, Utopia, D8000 Pro, Expanse, and Susvara. Maybe add the Meze Elite in that crowd as well. Plus the summit-tier electrostatics live in this price bracket (though those need a special amp and hence are disadvantaged on the price front by default). And people find ways to justify the price of those headphones. Will these new cans compete at the same level as its price peers? That is the question that Yamaha must answer. They've chosen to challenge the best, now we wait to see if they can deliver.

I dug a little deeper and here's some more info I found:
The YH-5000SE will go for 495,000 yen (450,000 yen excl. tax) in Japan. I am already seeing disinformation being spread on Reddit, so let me clarify, the following are the official prices:
$5000 (US) | $7500 (AU) | £4800 (UK)

The YH-5000SE will NOT go for $3550 (equiv. to 495,000 yen)!!

It appears as though the special edition is all about the premium accessories, and likely a more premium package. According to "What Hi-Fi?", the standard version is set to cost $6000 (AU), which is equivalent to $4000 (US). If that turns out to be true, that's very good news for everybody. This information did not come from Yamaha, which means that it could still cost more or less than that.

Also, I posted recently about the pre-order and shipping dates, but I'd like to say that these dates come from the official Yamaha JP sources, which likely means that these dates are for Japan.

Prices of the incl. accessories (should you want to purchase them separately) and release dates:

For the savings you get on the headphones duty-free and the conversion rate, you can fly out to Tokyo from New York in January/February, spend 2 nights at a good hotel all-inclusive, fly home and still come out on top 🤣😭

Back in the day Yamaha receivers had special headphone outs marked "orthodynamic". Those receivers are still sought after by Vintage enthusiasts as they had very powerful sound on HP out with most headphones.
Yamaha should provide something suitable now as well.

But for a 5000$ headphone you expect a high end tube amp to be used, and something like a Denafrips multibit ladder-DAC as a DAC. I'm sure there are similar Japanese options, but most Japanese high end isn't available in the west
