Somebody posted at some point that Penon stocks the exact replacement battery. I'd shoot them an email.

Probably the best bet but this one on ebay will fit. It's only 1500mah so will cost you a couple hours battery life. but better than a useless player. You'll have to cut the connector from the old battery and solder/splice it onto the new one. Insulate the solder points well. Heat shrink tubing is best to use for that.

I'll take mine apart and see if they're metal or plastic. I agree with just about everything you said about the X3. The controls are very ergonomic but the front panel etching is too prone to scratching, but typical cheap Chinese players don't generally have all-metal housings, and the sound quality is also far above the typical player. That said, the firmware is typical; basic functionality and even that with serious bugs. So, it's Rockbox combined with the above-average hardware that makes this player at all worth having.

I'm aware that Rockbox downsamples hi-res files, but it's debatable if the difference is really noticeable in a player of this grade, so I don't count that too much in the negative column for what you get for the price. The functionality of Rockbox plus this hardware for this price is hard to beat by any player currently available. It's actually quite a unique combination.

I was set on getting the X10 because the hardware of the X3 is so impressive, but after thinking about it, I will only get the X10 if Rockbox gets ported to it. I don't believe Xduoo are capable of presenting value in their firmware which is commensurate with their hardware.

As a follow up to the buttons being metal or plastic, they're both. All round buttons are metal. all others are plastic.

So, volume buttons, power, back, option, and pause/play: metal

forward & rewind (the triangular buttons), and lock switch: plastic

@Riolist2 & @stellarelephant
Thanks for that. I originally bought it from tomtop...but I will get in touch with Penon to see what they say/if they are willing to help.

However - I did take the player apart and measure the battery ... it was sitting nicely at 3.6V which is more or less spot on for LiPo? Or does this suggest something else may have gone bad?
I guess next step would be to run it off external power via the battery terminal...but I don't have the connector on hand so that would be pretty hacky....

Just measuring the voltage with no load (current draw) is not a reliable way to test the battery. I wouldn't risk applying external voltage to the player unless you have a good voltage adjustable regulated power supply to use. If you have another good 3.7V Lithium Ion battery even if it doesn't fit in the player you could test it with that, but the more you mess with circuit board the more you risk possibly damaging it with a static discharge. If I were you I'd wait until you get a suitable replacement battery, install it carefully, and you'll probably have your player back.

Also, don't connect the player to a USB source without the battery connected. That could possibly damage the power supply circuit.

Hi, a single Li-ion battery at 3.7v is nearly empty.
It is full at 4.2v

You can charge it only with a special circuit board specialised in charging Li-ion.
(Li-po uses another circuit and voltage)
Any charger for single Li-ion will work (ex for a camera's battery)

You could test if the problem comes from the battery itself,
or from the li-ion charging circuit of the Xduoo X3

I am glad that worked. What type of card are you using and have you tried to reformat it?

Once again, thank you for helping me out!

I am currently using a 128GB SanDisk Ultra card. I reformatted it, went back to stock firmware to get a clean slate and re-installed the current Rockbox version.

That did the trick. Happy camper again...

Thanks!

Well I got mine to work halfway I guess.

It wouldn't turn on no matter how I tried to reset it.

So one day I just said F-it and plugged it in to the USB on my laptop, and it turned on. Now the problem is that it only works while it's charging. So if I unplug it it shuts off completely and becomes unresponsive.

I think I'll head over to Home Depot and grab the screwdriver mentioned above, try to reset it from the inside.

This happened to me with my Hifiman HM-700, the battery was gone. I had to ship it to penon to have it fixed.
You may be able to change the battery yourself though, if nothing else works.
