Just heard this
HD224X is the best Sennheiser closed can, HD224X>HD222>HD250>>>>>HD265/HD25/HD380(What are these, Axel Grell?)
and HD430>HD540gold / HD560

Mr.Fritz Sennheiser he is the BEST HEADPHONE MAKER EVER! *salute*  LOL

How big is the different between HD224x and HD222? HD224x seems very difficult to get hold of, but HD222 seems possible.

If any of you have any pair of flattened HD540II velour pads that you don't want or need, could I please have them? As long as they aren't ripped or falling apart, I could probably clean them and re-foam them. I ask because I accidentally ripped one of my pads the other day and now I need a new pad or pad pair in order to complete the headphone. I will pay you postage plus a bit extra. Thanks.

HD224x is like a super JH13PRO or super 430/560/540/800(with occ cable)
it's the most versatile , most musical headphone I've ever heard

I thought i was listening to a $1500-$2000 headphone(540 sounds like a $700-$800 headphone)
it's better than the vintage stax lambda signature (PVC) too
I know it's unbelievable, this is just my two cents

HD222 is like a closed version of K240M,made by Jorg Sennheiser.
they are in different league

When listening to an album,my feelings:

HD540 Gold: Wow,sound is beautiful gorgeous,highs are golden,nice, cool, ...
but the mids & bass seem strained?"after 30mins, I started to miss my 430/560/224x

430/560: "Nice sound too, music is moving me,female vocals are sweet & cute"
it is such a pleasant experience, they make me smile,I can listen to them for hours

224X: OMG(224x is even more gorgeous than 540gold),sound is realistic,
music is full of life & emotion, there is a story in every track, how charming...I need to re-listen to all my music collections"

sorry, I am going to sell my HD540 gold,(forgive me, because this is a 540 appreciation thread)
I used to love HD540 too.
I hope you guys still enjoy HD540,it's a very nice headphone

I recently found myself a cheap HD222 in good condition with the original steel cable  - with the stock pads they are like putting seashells against your head - they have a very closed sound and in fact the earcups vibrate with all the bass bouncing around.

I was still experiencing 'buyer's denial' when I tried some similar-sized HiFiMAN HE400 velour pads which I wasn't using - luckily they are the right size to go on the HD222 and stay there! I found the 'closed bass hump' much reduced and the midrange more free to do it's thing (really nice midrange on these). The vibration is all but gone too.

If you can find a reasonably-priced HD222 and can get velour pads somehow, it's a nice fix.

Very attractive indeed.

Well, I hope you can find something better then 224x soon, and then consider selling the 224x as a result of that, ... and please mark me queue no. 1 for your 224x, much appreciated. :p

I have just accidentally severed a connection wire on one of my Ref I 600 Ohm drivers so now it's useless. If any of you have a spare 600 Ohm driver available or spot one online, could you give me a heads up. Thanks.

Doh... >_<

Believe it or not
224X is more musical & timbre is better than HE90

with the HD430/224X, music has more emotion, more powerful, timbre has more colour & juice.
they are more convincing than the newer Sennheiser

1970's Sennheiser > 80-90's Sennheiser

Recently ordered a restored pair of Sennheiser HD 540 Reference II headphones from o0CosmoMemory0o with his new earpad foam installed.
Looking forward to receiving them!
Thanks Ash!

No worries, they're on their way now. I can't make them absolutely physically perfect due to having to re-use old materials but I think they look and sound great. You will be hard-pressed to find extreme neutrality like that on today's headphone market.

HD540 parts everywhere.

Gotta sew up the rest of those pads.

Top left is the HD540I original pad. Bottom left is the HD560 pad. Middle is the most common HD540II velour pad. Bottom right is the slightly different HD540II velour pad (my favourite type but I only have enough of them for my own HD540IIs) and top right is the same pad but without the backing pleather, which I had to remove when I installed new foam.

Pads in same positions as above but flipped over so you can see the backs.

Front of HD540I original pad.

Back of HD540I original pad (left) and back of HD560 pad (right). Notice they both have a non-fabric backing to the inside of the attachment ring. The HD540I pad sounds better than the HD560 pad IMO but both backings prevent the sound being as spatial as it could be IMO.

Front of my favourite pad. Only have very few of this type which I'm keeping for my own HD540IIs.

Back of my favourite pad type. No backing plastic. Thin pleather covers white fabric that has small holes that let the sound through to the foam for best dispersion.

My remaining stock foam.
