I just got my babies back into my collection.

My 2nd pair of RS-1s arrived today. One of the biggest mistakes I ever made in this hobby was selling my first pair of beloved RS-1s. I will not be making that mistake again.

Listening to them with tube amplification with bowls right now, and I couldn't be happier.

These are the only headphones I have ever purchased twice, which is really saying something about how I feel about them (check my profile for other phones I have owned).

Happy days indeed.

Grado RS-1 = pure expression of musical emotion. No other dynamic phone that I have heard to date gives me the emotional connection to my music quite the way a pair of Grados does.

Great - now I have to keep my RS-1s as well as my GS-1000s,K-1000s, and of course HP-2s - The original idea was to just keep the 3, but every time I have the idea to sell the RS-1s, I read a thread reminding me of how great they are. I guess I will have to keep them (happy about that

). I now have only narrowed my collection down to 4 headphones...

, not practical, but who cares right?

I really love small venue live recordings. Especially blues/rock and my new ms-pros are absolutely perfect for this. the attack/sustain/tembre of these are just incredible. I am in string heaven ;p I think my hd595s are going to feel a bit negelected

I still have my first Grado, SR-80, as something sentimental. However, I've just bought another set of SR-60.... just to keep my closet crowded...

We've got to have them all....

IMO, Grados really do make the best compliment to Senns. If you listen to hard rock, metal, or techno, then you should experience a Grado immediately! Senns are better for electronica, alternative, and punk IMO.

I wonder if Grados are the most popular brand here, as I notice both AKG and Senn fans have some Grados. Seems like very few people are both AKG and Senn fans.

For my own personal preference, I think that the SR-225 and RS-1 sound their best (most musical, euphonic, organic, emotional) with bowls and tube amplification.

When I use a solid state amp (such as the Headfive or Tomahawk) I almost always prefer to use flats with my Grados. I think that solid state amps make the Grados sound a bit too lean when used with bowl pads, and can be fatigueing during longer listening sessions.

With that said, I think that the Headfive does a wonderful job driving the SR-225s and RS-1s (with flat pads). It is a great little amp, especially when considering for how little a used one can be had for in the FS forum! So although I have had the Headfive for only a short time, my early impressions are that it mates very well with the SR-225 and RS-1, with the caveat that flat pads are used.

All IMHO of corse.

If you really want to put a new pair of headphones to the test, I wouldn't recommend Clapton's Unplugged. Yes...it's very well recorded but it isn't very complex and because it's a higher quality recording than average, it will sound pretty good on virtually anything. They used to use it to sell Bose equipment around here. Most people thought it was because it was Bose equipment. It was actually the quality of the recording. If you're going to use it as a reference, make sure you don't use another recording if you're trying different equipment.

actually, exactly 225. it's got to be a sign that he should give grados a try!

i agree that both the Grado and Sennheiser house sounds need to be sampled before you move up the chain of command. personally, in a perfect world where i didn't have broken condenser mics and a bad A/D converter, i'd have a pair or RS-2s and HD650s sitting on my desk at this very moment. they're really just the opposite type of coloration... they COMPLETE eachother!
