The WA5 premium upgrades adds more to the longevity of the equipment, unlike the WA33 upgrades that has better transformers which directly affects sound quality in a greater sense.

I tried the regular HD800 with the W5LE a long time ago. It was also the very first time trying the HD800. My thing is really there is a very small emotional connection between the HD800 and myself. Meaning it went through the motions but never pulled on my heartstrings? So? I also tried the HD800 with various mods and a Ray Samuels amp, forget which one........still I felt non-engaged. You may need a recommended from a member with a real love for the HD800S? Someone that likes the headphone out of a range of amps?
Still great detail, transients, soundstage and balance though I never felt the low end. It was there, but not exciting for some reason? Some of the best imaging I have ever heard which was truly cool, the way stuff was taken apart and spread-out.
I have HD800 and Utopia. I think the beauty of WA5 LE is that with all the toggles you can adjust to have good synergy with many headphones. I like both, of course Utopia is better, HD800 heaving best soundstage, but this you know already...
I assume you're talking about the second-gen LE, the first-gen doesn't have enough power for the 1266. Anyways, the 1266 has been the premier headphone pairing for the WA5 family since forever. It is spectacular in every regard.
My setup with WE 300B KenRad 6sn7 vt231 black top and 596 killer pisses all over the other amps I had. The wa234 was too neutral where WA5 LE gen 2 with Mundorf caps is crazy. The DAC is amazing and maybe old but sounds better than many other ones I owned.
