I am concerned about hearing damage-Do you think that on the bus i will have to crank up the volume into dangerous levels?

Yes, most probably you'll have to crank the volume up to overcome the noise

Not only that, the dt990 may hurt hearing of people near you! (joke! )
But really. DT880 is the most open headphone i can suggest to listen on a bus, without disturbing others. DT990 is 100% open. 
Unless you listen to most polite music i can imagine (which most audiocentric people dont) you do not really want other people to hear it. For example, i have my Fiio X3 on shuffle, so once in a while, something like Ion Dissonance or Skrillex is bound to get played.

The DT880 sounded a bit artificial and too bright. The DT990 is what i really liked. I guess i'll go for the DT660 which are closed and are great too, Except for the closed sound (I shouldv'e never listened to open headphones! Now i know what i am missing!)
Maybe i'll buy the DT990 soon when i have the money for home use. Still i need to audition the HD600 and the K701

Well, the question was "Will wearing the DT990 in public be a problem?", and the answer is - it will. Plain simple. Bad choice for a public headphone, unless you wear it for walks, or for relaxing somewhere in forest.
