Will the beyer DT 880 sound better than the DT 770 from a portable amp?

I didn't think the DT880 worked well at all from a portable. It sounded its best with a powerful tube-based amp. I haven't spent much time with the DT770, so I won't comment.

SR71-A actually drives the 880's very well within sane sound levels, albeit on the high gain setting. Portable amps with smaller huevos or going directly out of a portable source is a joke with these phones. You need something more to go to 11. Both the CI and Cosmic do the job with ease.

Edit: Mine are '03 250 ohm

In the first place, the DT880 doesn't sound like the DT770, one is an closed back, the other is a closed/open hybrid. But the DT880 is certainly one of the hardest headphones out there to drive, so no, please get a proper desktop amp for the DT880.
