WiiM Streamers Mini and Pro
Feb 22, 2024 at 9:56 PM Post #751 of 781
I have Amazon Music Unlimited. No 192kHz issues either with Pro or Mini.
I had heard about some issues with using different optical cables as you mentioned in the other thread, hopefully I will find the original cable tomorrow.

Butt I also heard some issues that didn't center on that but more with the Mini itself so I wanted to enquire as I saw a similar issue post.

Hopefully I can get it worked out just seemed odd to me how I could have no issue with 192 albums from Qobuz or Tidal with the same cable but Amazon HD was giving me fits! 🤣

Perhaps @brantome can point me to a Wiim forum thread?

Cheers!!

Use coaxial cable instead of Toslink, you won't have any more trouble.

The Mini doesn't have coax though. I use the Minis when I'm on the road to save space and make things a bit more portable as I'm already transporting enough gear as it is. I do have a couple of the Pros at home and I use coax on those, though. Thanks for the suggestion.

BTW, to make it clear, the 24/192 transmission worked for several months with zero problems on both Minis and the cables I have tried have zero problems transmitting 24/192 from other sources so I don't think it has anything to do with the optical fibers in my particular situation.

Have you considered doing a full reset of your Mini?

Nope, I didn't even think of trying that on this one. I tried it on the first one with Wiim's support back before they sent me this one so I'd imagine it's definitely worth a shot. Thanks for the heads up! 👍😎

Now let's see if it works... 🤞

Here's a horrible idea: Why bother with 192kHz anyways?!
Unless you are mixing/mastering audio recordings, there's literally no reason whatsoever why you would ever need such a high sampling rate.

You say you use the Mini while "traveling".. what are you packing, an entire mastering studio in a campervan?! :dt880smile:

I do not think people are chasing 192kHz. But they (we) want to play 192kHz native tracks avoiding down sampling them.

In any case, even if 192Khz is not essential for listening to music, in my modest library there are various tracks that are offered to me at 192Khz by the streaming services I use (e.g. Tidal and Qobuz).

I'm a professional musician who travels (and, yes, reviews recordings) while touring with my band. So basically you found the one exception that you mentioned lol. 🤣

I have a space in the tour bus' cargo hold and multiple travel cases on the gear truck that carry some of my favorite and necessary gear with me. When you're gone for 75% of a given year and sometimes much more it's important to find ways to both enjoy yourself/your hobbies and be productive on the road. You would too if you spent the majority of your life touring. The tour bus essentially becomes your home and making it feel as close to home as possible is important to me and to making touring that much sustainable. Unfortunately, we're not rich enough yet to have private jets at our beck and call to be able to shoot home on a whim. 😉

Also, I think I made it clear that it wasn't a big deal to me, but the fact of the matter is that I do have some of my masters and digital downloads that I own that are in 24/192 so it would be nice to restore the functionality. To clarify something else, I'm not here trying to claim that 24/192 is a resolution somone must have to enjoy music or that there's a night and day difference between it and other 24bit resolutions. However, it is a resolution sometimes used in recording applications and it's also a resolution some of my favorite album purchases came in. The internal resampling on the Mini is quite audibly poor and the measurements on the device back that up so I was just hoping someone had a fix, but nothing that I've tried from suggestions here, on other forums, and through Wiim CS have worked. 🤷‍♂️

Regardless, I appreciate the advice and you taking the time to try to help. This issue isn't something I'm encountering often enough to be that much of an issue, but if it starts to annoy me more then I'll just grab one of my Pros from home when I head back for a few days here soon. No big deal. Happy listening! 👍😎

Edit: Fixed a misspelling.

Sorry to ask, but what exactly is the problem you have with the MINI@192?
Do you hear crackles in the sound or is it a complete
no-go (silence)?

No problem. I'm always happy to answer questions. I get zero sound when I have the audio settings set to 24/192 from either the sample test audio or 24/192 tracks. If it was crackling or "skipping" it would potentially be a cable or jitter issue, but that's not what's going on here. 🤷‍♂️

As I mentioned in my original post, this is the second Mini that's done this after working fine with 24/192 for several months. When I contacted Wiim's customer service about the first one they said it was a bug with a firmware update that caused some units to have a problem. I should also note that Wiim's CS once again stepped up and they're sending me a new Mini. I said it wasn't necessary but their CS rep insisted after working with me over a few days trying various fixes. I've had nothing but great experiences with their support reps. 👍😎

I tried that this morning and it did not help.

I reached out to Wiim support, and even though I am long out of warranty I asked for suggestions to solve the issue.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions...

Cheers!!
