Whose idea was it at first? To try the iRiver H120 with the optical out into the iBasso D10? And I believe, at first, out into the iBasso D1? Who was the guy behind this audio monster? :P

There were probably several people but Jamato certainly was one of them. I got the D1 the day it was released and used it with a Sony pcdp via optical. When the D10 came out I got one and at the same time a H-140.

raymondu999,

Would you have a link that explains installing the 120GB drive into an iRiver ihp120? Any comments on the ease or difficulty would be appreciated.

Is your 120 rockboxed? I'm not even sure if the rockboxed 120 works with the optical out, but I'm guessing it does.

TIA, George

This info could very well be out of date but I think only 120 gig drives will fit into the iriver h140 owing to the extra thickness of the enclosure.

The h120's will, I think, accept a drive upto 80 gig.

I think a general rule of thumb is 5mm for h120's and 8mm drives for the h140.

There is also a nicer adaptor out there at the moment from Korea which should help further reduce space taken up from the use of adaptors when doing a hdd swap.

The links above are useful, as will Jamato be, especially with reference to the new thinner/smaller adaptors from korea that are available on ebay also.

I've already done the procedure for my h140 hence the opening gambit regarding possibly out of date info, but the thickness of the drives should still stand as a general guideline to follow re 5mm for the 120 enclosures and upto 8mm for the 140 enclosures.

I found using the stock battery with the upgraded hdd provided a better fit, however, these new adaptors may have remedied much of that problem and the extended batteries may fit nicely alongside an upgraded hdd.

mistic river is definitely your friend for these procedures though.

True but no gapless support. I used pretty much the first beta release of Rockbox, and tested bootloader out. I switched to Rockbox then, it did crash a few times but got more stable pretty quickly.

Wow! This discussion is raising more issues for me--very interesting.

Do I have this right that Rockbox will allow gapless playback using the digital out as well as the HP out or is that true for only the HP out?

Next question and this is prompted by the new IEMs that are appearing on the market, such as the JH-13: I have a high frequency hearing loss (down 10db at 2000 and -50 db at 8000hz, by the way this is considered a "mild hearing loss" in the field). The top of the line hearing aids crap out around 9000hz so even speakers or AKG K1000s ,which I use, are less than fully satisfactory. I'm thinking that the new IEMs might take a fair amount of equilization---not 50db (doesn't need to be if its an IEM) but something less and with better frequency extension. I have read that Rockbox has a very good equilizer--hence my interest in the iHP120. Does the equilizer only affect the analogue out or will it also equilize the digital out?

Top of the line hearing aids cost 2500-3000 per ear. So the JH-13 at a 1000 for two ears seems like a real bargain--if it works! VBG
