Simple question: Which headphones have the best timber, tone and texture? Like the bite of a trumpet or the texture of a bow across strings? I'm looking for something amoung the topshelf 'phones that gives real density to the sound.
Some would say AKG K1000, if you are OK with the bass rolloff...
(I say "someone" instead of me because, although I think the K1000s' do qualify, I've heard only a few headphones so I can't say it's the best)
I don't have a ton of experience with headphones, but one of the first things I was impressed with when listening to the Denon ah-d5000's was pretty much exactly that: timbre, tone, and texture. I thought they sounded pretty dang remarkable in that regard. I ended up not keeping them due to the bass quantity, but that is a different matter.

If you like the timbre, tone, and texture you hear on the D5000, be prepared to be amazed when you get to hear the K1000 in a quiet environment.
The k1000 eh? I was afaird of that. Out of production headphones don't interest me much. I'm also surprised there is no mention of eletrostatic phones.
@thread. Oops must have been posting at the same time.
Yes, the HD-800 gets just about everything right. I like my DT48 almost as much, but it doesn't have the same soundstage or bass depth. The K-240DF, K-1000 and HP-2 are also excellent.
The best I've heard, however, is still the Quad ESL-63. You can find a pair in good shape for less than a HD-800, too. If you have the room, they are wonderful.
