Which headphones have Sweetest Mids?
Mar 22, 2008 at 4:09 AM Post #16 of 43
Of the ones you list, I own the K-501, DT880, RS-1, HD-600, and HD-650.

I don't know if "sweet" is the right word, but I enjoy the K-501 mids best. Especially with tubes.

That does not mean the others have bad mids. Not even close - all of them are excellent. In terms of neutrality and excellent response, the HD-600 and DT880 are very, very good in the mids.

Really, I can't see you being disappointed in any of these.

This is good encouragement for me to stay patient waiting for my Headamp BHSE. I have had the O2's for a few months now but no amp. Arrrggghhhh.

Out of all of the ones listed that I have heard (I haven't heard a couple of them), I thought that the K501 had the best mids I have ever heard. Slightly foward, crystal clear, and kind of like a grado but with actual soundstage (and not nearly as colored) .

It almost makes me sad that I didn't wait and snag one on head-fi instead of getting the DT 880. But, I love the bass extension on the beyers (in comparison to the K501), so I'm still happy.

Lets hope it ends up being worth the wait!

DX1000 and Headphiled K340 are tied as far as mids are concerned, although the DX1000 is far better overall.

I used to love my HD650s, but lately the experience of listening to them is like stuffing cotton in both ears and then putting on my DX1000s.

I didn't vote because I've only heard most of the cans at one meet over a year ago. I own the DT880 and have owned the K501. If I had to choose, it'd be the K501. I sold them because of the great prices they get, and the fact that I have a nearly identical K500, as well as a K400 and K401. All fantastic mids.

that's fine - I assume that many haven't tried all of above, but whichever they feel has the best mids - it's all subjective.
I'm surprised to see that HD650 got so many votes - I wasn't impressed with their mids.

Yea, neither was I. I think this is where the "I own it, so I vote for it" comes into play. The hd650 midrange wasn't bad at all, but just nothing at all special about it. The rs-1, k501, and w5000 all easily best the hd650 in the mids department due to their forward and lively presentations imo.

AD2000 isn't too bad in mids either

- not as detailed as W5000s, but nevertheless very sweet. I guess it's due to so many people owning HD650s :p

Yeah, I bet that sums up most of the votes.

I agree. I do very much enjoy balanced HD650's (with Silver Dragon cable) but they are just not a "clear" sounding as the JVC's. The HD650's are awfully good, though, when balanced and used with a top-notch amp.
