Unless you write some music preferences and price range, the list is not going to be shorter.

As for me (I've become a Grado sound lover) all Grados except RS-2 and may be SR-325 are bargains. The price is going to the headphone and not to the box and other unnecessary things. (Except RS-1, but it's accessories are quite useful).

The Sony V6, in the lower price range.

Also, the Sennheiser 580/600 is probably the best value for the money. In the case of the 580, you can get a 'real' high end can for $150.00 or less. . . . . Think for a moment as to what that money would buy you in any other brand? . . . . . Only a mid range headphone at best.

Score one more for the "used HD600" camp... I can attest that

ER4P/S for me.

I am into nothing but practically bargain phones, but the Ety's top it for me because I use them the most and have for the longest time.

Actually I just bought a brand new pair and sold my old ones for cheap just to get a newer pair and shorter cord. The extra cost means little to me because from all the listening time and travel time it has already paid itself off and then some. I'd dare say it is an improvement of health and well-being for me when I commute by train everyday and notice huge difference between using Ety's compared to earbuds in how tired I feel by the end of the day.

They are also the most expensive, but I consider them a better bargain than my AKG240S, DT880, or even the brand new pair of HD600's I have had sitting in its box for $175.

Best bargain is whatever headphone you buy that gets you off the "upgrade" path. For me that's the HD600's and (soon) Sensaphonics.

The AKG 501 is an absolute bargain at $149.95 street. Has the best upper mids, and lowest listening fatigue I've experienced, and I'm comparing them to my Sennheiser 600s and Akg K 1000s. The bass is tuneful and tight compared to the Senns, but at 120 ohms they respond well to a muscular amp.

While I do feel that all the cans I posted are indeed great deals, I'll narrow down the list further to appease you nitpickers:

Audio-Technica ATH-A500 $100
AKG K240S $100
Beyerdynamic DT531 $100
Grado SR60 $70
Sennheiser HD580 $150
Sony MDR-V6 $70

Etymotic ER-4S or 4P - $220
Grado SR60 - $70 ($100 w/ Flats, which I wholeheartedly recommend)
Koss KSC-35 - $30

The first is one of the best headphones you can get and it's extremely versatile to boot...for a great price too. Best deal ever. I'll never part with them. The latter two are both the best you can do for under $100. Great deals for anyone starting out.

Bargain-wise, I think the KSC-35/50/55/Porta-Pro family is the champ. I'm thinking of bargain from non-audiophile POV. From an audiophile POV, most headphones are bargains, given that they're not terribly overpriced.

My own personal list:

ms-1
ety 4p/s
I got the Philips 890s for €40 new, that was a bargain!
biggrin.gif

Koss ksc-35 (don't have it anymore, but that sound for the price was a bargain)

Honorable mention to cans I've never heard:

Akg 240s
Beyer dt531

I haven't put the Senn 600s on the list, because I made the mistake of listening to the Senn 650s. So the Senn 600s haven't taken me off the upgrade path at all. But yeah, I suppose they could be called a bargain.

Best bargain headphones:

Sennheiser HD580/600: A great deal. You get a top 5 dynamic can for <$200!

Koss Portapro: An incredible deal. Very musical, and great sounding. Built quite well. Very easy to drive. These are very "fun" cans that are suprisingly very listenable. I bought mine new for $55 CAD

Etymotic ER4S: A great deal. These sound great, are built well, and will extract detail better than the vast majority of cans. Can typically be picked up for $220 from eBay.

Stax SRS-2020: Also a great deal if you'd like to go the electrostatic route. Keep an eye out! These include both the headphones (earspeakers), and driver unit. These can be had for ~$400-550.

To all those that feel V6's are a deal at ~$100 USD, I have to disagree on this one. I'm not going to say they aren't "fun" phones but if we're talking about an entry into head-fi'dom, I simply coudn't recommend them.

I think it's extremely redundant and pointless to say HD580 are bargain without any basis. Of course we all know they're great headphones. But why, because they're $150 now. Were they $150 last year???Nop! This is what makes classic and this is why in my thread 'how headphones devalue' is trying to gather all info and provide simple chart at the end once all info is gathered. Therefore, please help me to do this project and once done it will be presented in nice graph chart for all head-fiers to see. Thanks.
