Of the phones I've owned... not sampled, tried, heard for 20 seconds at a meet, etc. Limited to those in production and calculated on US LSP where available.

Notable phones of great bargain ratio:
AKG K271S
Audio-Technica ATH-D1000 (only because you effectively get DAC and amp in package)
* Sony MDR-V6 (extrapolated from owning 7506 and by anecdotal and brief comparison between 7506 and V6)
* Beyer DT880
Sony MDR-CD3000
Grado SR80
* Shure E2

Notable phones of particularly poor bargain ratio (has nothing to do with whether they are good not not, although the V500 does suck particularly badly)
Sony MDR-V500DJ
Sony MDR-7509
Grado SR325
Grado RS-1
Stax Omega II

* Top 3 bargain picks. The V6 as a closed all-purpose phone, the DT880 as a hi-fi phone, Shure E2 as a canalphone with the levels of isolation that we typically expect from canalphones.

You can buy it at djmart for $80. I don't know if it's in production but you can still buy it new.

On a side note. I keep changing from plural to singular when thinking about headphones, and I notice we all do it when we post. I may say "it" costs $80, then I think maybe it should say "they" cost $80. I think plural would be more correct, but then does anone really care?

The Sharp HP-MD33-S.

I bought mine from www.bluetin.com for 25 pounds. (great service, 5 days post)

Note that I've never heard the Shure E2c or Sony EX71, the most similar types of phones, but compared to the SR60s, besides the fact that they are earplugs, (which brings with it a slightly different sort of sound, which I'm not sure that I prefer), they are as articulate, less bright, have only very slightly less bass impact, and extremely careful listening does reveal that they are less resolving.

The bass is perceptibly muddier though, but because of the isolation they are actually preferable for most general portable use; are easier to carry around, are extremely comfortable, and are preferable to me for most classical/jazz music. They are comparable cans, and I might decide to liquidate my SR60 because I foresee that I shall be using it much less.

Note that they actaully have more bass impact that my KSC-50s, have slightly less muddy bass, seem smoother, have a tad more resolution and overall are definitely preferable. I do prefer the SR60 to the KSC-50, mostly because of the greater bass kick, and these seem firmly in the middle. (and I'm keeping the Kosses cuz they are nice to exercise with)

(I'll probably do a more through review later, this is very much "first impressions", I'd actually created a post like this yesterday, but my internet connection crapped out.)

This was straight out of an iPod, with LAME 3.90.3 APS files.

Actually, you have to understand that most of the headphones recommended here are already bargains? There are many many many other headphones on the market which don't even get a mention.

*probably* these are better value that all of those, although even that is not certain. (but I *think* they are.)
