Some favs:

Doctor Zhivago - great story, great music, superb cinematography

A Clockwork Orange - McDowells performance of "Singin in the Rain" is priceless

Die Hard - I don't know what it is about this movie, but you can just watch it over and over and never get tired of it

Mary Poppins - Dick Van Dyke is from my wifes hometown, and he is great in this

Grosse Point Blank - John Cusack as a paid assassin who is deeply troubled by his work and his "moral flexibility"

Blazing Saddles - "That's Hedley"!

An American in Paris - easily Gene Kelly's best work

The Graduate - partially because of the use of Simon and Garfunkel

Has anyone seen UHF? It's a comedy starring Weird Al Yankovic and Michael Richards that came out in 1989. It' really really funny in many places and worth seeing, although not perfect. Actually it's worth buying since it's only $9.99 on DVD (even though it just came out AND has plenty of special features).

I remember seeing UHF a few weeks ago on tv. I only got to see parts of it of and on, but the parts I did see were pretty damn funny.

Ok, I just skimmed through and I don't think any of these have been mentioned:

Western:
Angel and the Bad Man
Lonesome Dove (own)

Comedy:
Better off Dead
Rustler's Rapsody

Silent:
Metropolis (futuristic drama from the early 1920's) (own)
misc. Harold Lloyd shorts (comedy - much better than Chaplin)

Chick Flicks:
Return to me
Sabrina (own)
An Affair to Remember (own)

Misc.:
The Quiet Man (own)
On the Beach (original 50's version)
Repo Man (helps if you are familiar with '80s alternative groups and music)
Gumball Rally (pretty shallow but fun)
The Mission
Failsafe (the storyline Dr. Strangelove parodies)

How about Cool Hand Luke. Paul Newman's the man.

Newer movies ... Being John Malkovich was one of the most creative, strangest, intriguing movies I've ever seen. I thought it was great. I know a bunch of people who didn't like it though, or just thought it was weird.
