What's your dream car? (within your budget)

Oct 14, 2006 at 5:19 PM Post #31 of 64
I'm pretty happy with my LegacyGT at the moment. A lot of the more fun cars are less practical cars, which makes it hard to buy one for your daily commute, trips to the grocery store, driving in snow in January, etc. I looked at stuff like a 350Z, new Mustang GT, RX-8, and so on. The Legacy was a good compromise - still fast, but it has four doors, a real trunk, and AWD for rain and snow. If I get to the position where I'm buying a second car just for fun, it'll be something less practical.

The other thing is that as your budget goes up, more cars come into the picture. If you've got 50 grand to spend, there are an awful lot of cars you should be looking at, depending on your priorities.

the atom seems like a pretty zippy car when shown on top gear, but in reality there it is a toy/track car only. completely impractical as a city driver.

btw, MOST cars with good sports suspension and tires will leave a bike in the dust in the corners. bikes are slower in the corners and faster in the straights compared to track cars. Now if you wanted to get a toy for the track there are a lot more outrageous cars that are quite a bit faster than the atom, since you are diving into the open wheel catagory already..

Ehhh, but I'm happy with my '96 TransAm. Still less than 50,000 miles on it, and I'd prefer to spend money on my other hobbies. I drive my speakers a lot more than I drive my car anyway!

And here is our 'not so dream anymore' baby... alas, with a black pearl body.

As said - not my dream anymore. Passed local customs two days ago - we are picking it up sometime next week.

It was this baby [and our family's private practice] that cleared my family's budget for quite a bit of time in the future - but I know it was worth it.

As one of your dream 'vehicles' you also listed a bike. That's funny because IMO the Atom is way more practical and safe than a bike. You can't fall off an Atom!

Sweet Jeebus, that Miata is growing on me something fierce.

Considering I can't afford ANY car worth mentioning at the moment, my top picks for cars I will likely own at some point are:

Datsun 240Z
Porsche 911 Carerra - 994 model (last air-cooled model)
A handful of poorman's track-ready racing cars.

The dream daily driver i listed is a miata, the bikes are for track days. no, you can't fall off an atom, but it is going to hurt like hell when the car in front of you throws a rock up and you realize you have no windshield or bodywork to protect you.

as fun as the atom looks, it will never be the same as a bike. there is something about a bike that is all man/machine, everything you do on a bike it will respond to. The atom is just a car that is too fast and too impractical for the street.

congrats on the most ignorant post in this thread, the Atom does have optional windsheilds and side bodywork. FWIW i would drive the piss out of the Atom on the street and yes i would be wearing a full face helmet, i could buy a sport bike tomorrow yet i dont b/c becoming a quadriplegic probibly isnt fun, neither is constantly looking over your shoulder to see if a car is about run you over. i would like a bike for dedicated track use but im realistic in knowing that i would definitely be driving it on the street.

I think most ppl with an Atom would treat it like an alternative to a bike, meaning they'd wear a full head covering bike helmet and leather protective gear. Too fast and impractical? I think not. Veyron is faster. The car is street legal. What fast car 'is' practical? Why do people buy fast cars anyway? Sure as hell not 'cause they want a practical car. If you want a practical car, get a van and drive it at exactly the speed limit.

congrats to you too on the most offensive thread in this post. i thought this thread was to discuss our dream cars not make attacks on each other?

if you buy an atom to "drive the piss out of" on the street, what a waste of a car. That car, as well as sport bikes, are meant for the track. Ripping around the streets is just putting yourself and others in danger.

Then again people do buy hummers for the street...

harkamus-hopefully people buying this car will consider buying a full face helmet as well. The image top gear gives off is idiotic. Moving at those speeds with nothing but a pair of sunglasses on... well you get the idea. IMO that is way too much power for a street car, why would you need such a high hp to weight ratio for, to light the tires up at every stop light? And just in case you think this is a jealous sportbikers attack on the atom, I also believe that most sportbikes have no place on the street either. Sad that Joe Schmo can plop down 10k for a hayabusa and hit 180mph on the street.

Yes there are faster cars, how about a top fuel dragster? my piont is how many people can realistically handle that much power at the rear wheel and keep it in control? Personally i think any potential purchasers should have to complete a track day or advanced driving lessons before being allowed to buy set car.
