What's YOUR Beef With PA2V2?

Aug 27, 2006 at 8:19 PM Post #47 of 80
Having received my PA2V2 and played with it for a bit, I'm experiencing some similar problems you all seem to have to tolerate. The low-volume scratchy is a problem, the shape isn't cool. Another I'd like to add is the on/off switch. I worry that it will break since it is so long. Maybe he can come up with a different switch such as a button or a standard light switch type thingy; something with a more controlled direction.

Another thing I was surprised with was the size of the amp. I have seen pictures of it, but in RL it seems a lot smaller. Thinner may be better in this case in relation to its popularity as part of a pocket rig. It'll fit in my pocket with my Vision:M but my SR-60 cord adds another level of inconvenience. I am considering ordering a Cable Turtle, but that also takes away the joy of a pocket rig. Maybe I'll have to get a male purse. =t

Nevertheless, for its niche in audiophileland, the PA2V2 does an absolutely terrific job. It is cheap, portable and comes with great service, and is immensely convenient. Gary knows what he wants it to do and does it successfully and concisely. We're just trying to make it moreso.

Yeah I mentioned to him the fact that I'm not using the mini to mini so that particular adjustment isn't feasible. What I am going to do is send mine back and have the gain adjusted down and see if that corrects the imbalance. If all else fails I guess I'll be looking for a new portable amp at about the same cost, since the imbalance is beginning to seriously impact my enjoyment of this amp.

I'll definitely be on the look out for a new model from him as well. Hopefully one without the bournes pot. Seems to me a better control would be available for around the same price point and without the channel imbalance at low volumes.

I guess sending the amps back for a gain adjust is a solution for the current model, but where talking about what should be upgraded, first thing in my mind is that bourns pot.

As for the quick response you got from Gary, that is what keeps his customers satisfied and recommending his product, seems no matter how busy he is, he is never to busy to stop and answer emails. I wish more vendors where like him. If there is an upgrade or a more expensive model (to correct the PA2V2 short comings) in the future I would buy again.

He should provide one with better connectors and shorter length.

When i bought mine i asked him about this issue and ask him if he could send me a 3 inch instead of a 6 inch but he told me that he used to send a 3 inch one but the product was cheaper than this one and that he got lot of complaint about it. Anyway i think that you should buy another good interconnect. I just got one from Qable and i am realy please with it.

Great value. PA2V2 has transformed my im716s. As for a future product, I would be more interested in a higher end desktop amp from Gary than an upgraded pocket amp.

I like the idea of buying a PA2v2, but the warm sound and rolled off highs does seem to limit slightly what phones you are able to pair it with. But it's still pretty awesome for $60 and I'd like to try it with my ety's just for the hell of it.

What's my beef?

Well, it's too good for the money!

Cheap, discrete looking, sturdy. Supplied with the AC adapter. Drives my HD555 really well, even though I thought they didn't need an amp. I strongly recommend it. I wonder how good a HD595 would sound out of such a nice little amp. Even a HD650...

I am new to this thing, so I cannot compare it to any other amp. After hearing from this little black box, I don't even want to hear from any other amp. I do feel that good about it.

I love your post. The PA2V2 is a great little unit.

No complaints

The PA2v2 is a fine amp. Of course, over time and as years go by, the technology will get better and be more refined but for now and for $60, ya get a nice unit and it recharges with great battery life. The music is loud and clear. It's all I need. What more do ya want for $60?

If I want something more refined, I just pull out my Hornet. Of course, that costs $350.

I think in the future it would be great if there were a portable amp with a built in MP3 player. That would be great. All in one unit.

Few things that would be nice, even if it brought the price up higher from 60$.

1) First, the pot must go. Mine is scratchy, and at very low levles there is imbalance. The knob is nice though.

2) I wish the input jack and output jack were labled. For the first few months I would get confused which was which (even if only a little picture of a headphone over the output jack).

3) I don't use the mini cable that was supplied.

4) I agree, if the unit was a little less wide, same height, and a little longer, that would be better for me.

If he could create a portable unit for ~100$ that sounded more Hi-Fi, that would be idea I think.

Thought I might like to update this thread. I recently encountered some other problems with the amp.

1) Any form of loud listening introduces clipping. Whether I turn down the DAP and turn the pot or turn up the DAP and turn down the pot, there seems to be so solution. He said to turn down the DAP and turn up the pot, but that hasn't been doing it for me, whatever I listen to. At first I thought it was the song files, but they're all lossless and sound fine without the amp.

2) I also noticed a heavy bass emphasis. What with the SR60s, it's a welcome change to fill the Grado's bass gap, but I myself am more of a upper-mids kind of guy in terms of violin and the electric guitar. He also explained this to me, but regardless, I'm not feeling it.

Anyone else experience these problems? I hardly even use mine anymore because of the major clipping. I emailed him and he said developments for the PA2V3 are a few months away from their start, but I think things are generally looking upwards.

Is there any beef with a HD580 paired with the PA2v2?

EDIT: Holy **** it took him like 5 minutes to respond to my email... Thats just ridiculous.

To be fair, we would do the same thread with any portable amp, or almost any gear here, we would get the same amount of things.
It would have been more fair as well to call it 'What would you want in a PA2V3' if it was the purpose of the thread. The title is a bit too much a call for negtive points.

I do not have the scratchy noise, I continnue to mess up with the 2 jacks, I do not hear imbalance, I still do not know what rolled off high means, I enjoy it as it is, for it's value and the fact it is rechargeable.

And I look forward for a PA2V3 !

Is the PA2V3 coming out soon or something? or is this just wishful thinking?

Last time Gary emailed me, which was the beginning of September, he said that he "doubt any future model will be complete for a few more months." Let's hope he gets it done in time for Christmas
