The problem is that we don't know how they changed the sound of the drivers over the different versions, but we do know they changed impedances, so it'd be a crap shoot, especially mounting a pair alongside the original QP85 driver, which has a really fine sound. If the PMB85 is using anything like the driver in the PMB Silverline SL, then it can't get anywhere near the QP85 for detail and precision.

I think he wants to mount them inside a Float 2 frame. Double action Float 2

i was just looking through the qp45x thread, and the drivers looked quite similar to the float 2/pmb85 drivers, although with a 100ohm impedance (instead of 60 as the pmb). the drivers on the pmb are about 55mm, one open and one closed

if the qp45x driver is indeed the same size as as the float 2 drivers it shouldnt be any probem fitting an extra pair of drivers to the float frame as it has even more room than the mb-float

does any of the QP headphones use a similar driver to the PMB85/float model 2?
if so, it would be tempting to make a dual driver float 2

Check out my old QP85 thread it talks in detail about different Float frames and phones: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/mb-...s-85-a-234628/

yeah, i was thinking of a double action float 2, not a double acton qp85

btw, are there any pictures of the qp85 drivers?

I was thinking about taking my Float 2 frame and installing 2 ortho 32 ohm drivers in it. The problem I see is mounting them in it. But it could be fun to get two 55 mm QP 250, 55 or 45 drivers into Float 2 frame.

I can imagine BIG bass.

Not sure, I don't have any. I might be able to take then, but I don't feel like busting up my QP85

i think the trick to the dual drivers are having one open and one sealed driver, one creating the bass and one taking care of the highs.
the driver placement on the PMB is kind of wierd, with the lower "bass" driver partially blocked by the housing

Well since bass is less directional than highs this should work just fine. Can you describe the sound of PMB85?

im not good at describing sound, but i guess its something like a less forward sounding float electrostat, with a larger soundstage, softer highs and similar amounts of bass, but with a bit more slam.
overall quite balanced i guess.

Are you saying in general, Quarts and ATs sound very similar? I don't know since I never owned an AT.

Nope, those are the bigger, higher-end drivers, as in the QP85 (and very similar to the whoppers in the QP95/95x/400), and not like the ones in the QP55x or presumably QP240/250.

No way, very different signatures. The mid-level MBs (not Quart, which never made headphones itself, it just bought MB to add in a headphone branch) are very mids-based and thick-sounding, i.e. the opposite of AT, and the top-end models are bright and mercilessly analytical, without the big bass of higher-end ATs. Quite different signatures actually, much closer to arch-rival Beyer than to AT, but back when the top of the Beyer line was the DT9x1 and not the old DT990.

if thats the case, then i guess a budget dual driver float2 wont be so easy after all
redface.gif
. how large are the different mb drivers?

They sound different. Quarts are more accurate and have more of a clinical accurate presentation, with emphasis on the top end. All the AT's that I heard, have this strangely colored midrange. I did not really mind because they have clean and dynamic sound with nice soundstage, but they were less bright and had more of that Japanese clean yet cold sound.

Bump this thread, because I would like to learn more about the sound of the QP250.
I'm curious how their comfort is, the soundstage, how they handle sibilance, how the bass, mids and treble are, PRaT etc.
Thanks.
Comparing to Floats and AT's doesn't help me, because I never heard one.
