What's up with the MB Quart QP250 ?

looks like it's a newer, improved version of basically your QP45x. Perhaps FV will see this thread and offer his insight, since he's probably heard one.

Yeah, I just basically bought both of them yesterday since I liked the price and they seemed to provide good bang for buck.

The QP250 is the replacement for the QP55x. The only difference between the two is the driver, but what exactly that difference is I don't know as I haven't ever had a QP250 in my hands. I did once get a message from Willi Pressutti of MB telling me that there wasn't a lot of difference in the sound of the two. Assuming MB was vaguely keeping up with the market at the time of the refresh, the change should be in the direction of bass impact. I'm sure it'll be competitive on an SR-60/80 level.

The most desirable MB headphones of the post-Peerless (ie PMB) days are the QP85 (floats); QP95, 400 (top open), or 450 (closed), the Beyer competitor line; and the monitor versions of the studio/POS/language lab workhorse, the QP805.

But the QP250 is closed w/ pleather pads vs. the open w/ velour pads on the QP240.

So I think it's QP55x->QP240 and QP45x->QP250.

I'm running on memory, and I think Willi was just writing to me off the cuff, so that may well be the correct relation of models.

Seems like it. At the very least you'll be able to tell us whether the driver was just tweaked or totally different.

I can sell you my QP70 to compare to both

Has anybody else tried the QP250? I think they are better than anything else I tried besides the K501 (which they are equal). They seem much better than the Sennheiser HD650 and MB Quart QP45x. And Still outperforms K601/K701. It seems as if the QP250 shares many characteristics to the K501 except having a less clear treble and more dominate bass.

Looks to be close to how my QP70 sound. I think QP70 are on par with A900 and sound very detailed and fast for a dynamic phone. I like them better than Sennheiser's I had back in the day, but I turns out I was never a fan of Sennheiser sound signature

does any of the QP headphones use a similar driver to the PMB85/float model 2?
if so, it would be tempting to make a dual driver float 2

QP drivers are very different from Float 2 as far as I can see. I have 2 QP phones (QP70 and QP85) and drivers are very different from my Float 2 drivers. QP headphones are also tuned very differently from floats. At leas the headphones I heard. All three QP phones (QP15 I sold some time ago) are much colder and detailed then my Float. Floats from what I hear are more midrange oriented and are on the warmer side.

What is the diaphragm diameter of the PMB85 drivers? I haven't seen any of the current QP line, but if they have similar-sized drivers to the previous two versions in the same frame, then the QP400/450 will have drivers too big for dual-mounting, and the QP240/250 is a better bet. The problem is that we don't know how they changed the sound of the drivers over the different versions, but we do know they changed impedances, so it'd be a crap shoot, especially mounting a pair alongside the original QP85 driver, which has a really fine sound. If the PMB85 is using anything like the driver in the PMB Silverline SL, then it can't get anywhere near the QP85 for detail and precision.
