What's the best sounding mp3 player w/o using an amp?

Best bet to get the Clix is Best Buy. eBay for the 4GB model, or the 2GB model if you are so inclined.

EDIT: And the 4GB black really is too sexi-with-an-i for words.

My Lists:

Class A
Kenwood Hd30gb9
Karma
Trekstor Vibez
Zune

Class B
Ipod Shuffle (ist generation)
Samsung Z5 (similar Sigmatel chipset as the old shuffle)
Creative ZVM (Zen V plus)
Meizu M6

Others vouch for the Cowon A2 and the mentioned iRiver players.

My vote for the Cowon A2, though I've only heard a few other DAPs. Beats the pants off of the iriver H120's headphone output.

I know they are diferent. but Cowon is pretty famous for sound quality. I know it's speculation, but I think this player will sound pretty amazing.

Anyone in the NYC area who wants to do a comparison of the sound quality of the Cowon A2, simply let me know. I intend to try to make it to the NYC meet in February barring any surprises from my wife. I'll gladly let people jack into the headphone out of my player and have a listen. It's really quite impressive. I'm listening to the Spirited Away soundtrack on it now, and I'm surprised by how much better it sounds on this than on the iriver H120 (I mean, come on, I just heard musicians shuffling and a page turning at 0:35 in "Nighttime Coming", talk about low background noise!). Now if the Cowon just ran Rockbox, I'd be a happy man! heh.

I don't know about that. Whenever people mention the Sansa E200 series they rate its sound quality lower than the others. I thought about getting one but that's what turned me away.

Yeah, Spirited Away is a brilliant film and wonderful soundtrack, even for us over-30 folks. And the Cowon A2 plays both beautifully! >

I remember having to watch the movie a few times to truly appreciate it. It was the same for Howl's moving castle made by the same team; another brilliant production. Great imagination!

Yeeaeh.... The first time I watched that, I didn't like it. It was only after watching it a second time that I really began to appreciate it...

I saw Howls Moving Castle in theaters, and I was the only one watching it! Great movie!

My top choice: Clix and YP-U2.
Both work well w/o amp, and both come with good EQ.
