Based on which OTL models you've heard? Did you really notice a lot of difference when using a transformer coupled tube amp, or several of them?

For me, I was on the verge of selling the K-701. It sounded plasticky and artificial. I decided to keep it until the Zana was ready, however. I'm glad I did. For the first time, the K-701 sounded pretty good. Good enough to keep.

Anyhow, the Zana is OTL. I've got another OTL under construction (Eric Barbour's Brute Force, and with the tube regulators) and I'll see how the K-701 handles that. I didn't like the K-701 with the PPX3 (OTL) or the Dickman Amp (coupled with Hammond 125E outputs), though.

I liked my K701s with my CEC 53Rv8. Not sure how easy it would be to find in that price range where you are.

Two good choices: Woo WA6 (max'd--skip the stepped attenuator to keep it under $1K), Mapletree HD+ Super (based on my experience with HD200, on which the Super is based). HD+ Super will provide more gain, but both amps will drive the K701 to satisfactory listening levels.

Both working in headphone mode of course. Going lower in the price range, fellows already mentioned some good choices.

I havent heard the CS600. But my K701's have never sounded better out of my new Leben CS300.

I'm listening to classical music with my K701s driven by the Little Dot MKIV SE tube amp and for $400 it's an excellent choice. I've read here that the LD MKIII for $200 works very well too.
I'm about to purchase the LD MKV SS amp to hear if it's even a better amp for the K701 and all the other phones in my stable.

K701 + HeadAmp GS-1 is a wonderful combination. I have heard this in the UK meeting, and there is a definite synergy there. You would have thought that a relatively uncolour amp and a relatively bright phone would not be suitable, but I definitely preferred K701 + GS-1 to Canamp + K701.
