Enjoyed the SS build.
Prefer to do another PTP with 2 or 4 tubes that are readily available and not more than $3 per.
Is there anything out there that will outperform the SS, and only cost ~ 50% more ?

The Starving Student is a pretty low cost build... I'm not sure if there's anything else in the price range.

What you can do, however, is to start looking for used transformers. You'll find them at industrial surplus stores, some second hand shops, occasionally on eBay, check to see if there are any old radio/TV repair places in town, hamfests, pull transformers from dead equipment, you get the idea. If you can get cheap iron, the rest is cheap if you don't go boutique. If you haven't visited Headwize, they have lots of plans for nice tube amps.

Thanks for the feedback ... keep it coming

digger945 - Saw a couple of amps on Headwise that looked good to me
especially the 15 volt, using tubes

Uncle Erik - Yea, I kept a nice transformer from a cassette deck that used
4 solenoids for controls

Still want PTP wiring but will use some perf board as well. Might be a
pretty tall order to build another one that will outperform the SS and
only spend ~ 50% more. I got lots of time, and lots of choices

Bijou can be ptp, and at least one builder also made the SOHA II ptp.

But, read through Pete's site - that is where you might best find what you seek - HA-2 or HA-1, depending on what you have in the way of iron.

You might also do a search for less pressivo here ecp.cc, but after that, you might look on Cavalli Audio or AMB Laboratories DIY Audio Site.

Oops, Headwize already mentioned.

The Bijou? or maybe some flavor or Millet amp?

Is the Bijou really a good second project? You have to sign a waiver to order a kit from Glass Jar because of the high voltage.

Based solely on ptp and cheap tubes, that is what is available. P2p does not sound like a kit, which eliminates GJA.

The requisite high voltage warnings are on all the referenced linked sites.

This needs updating, but is a pretty amazing list.

Sadly, this thread contains pretty much the universe for DIY designs, well, at least the successful ones. Between Headwize, Pmillett, Ti (amb), Alex Cavalli, and Dsavitsk (ecp.cc), there are only a few more options that kinda float via PM, and some esoterics like the Menace, Raven, etc, that are all high $$$ hotties, and NOT where mere mortals tread (meaning sack up for $2000 + in parts).

You might also scan DIYAudio, but it is all over the map and NOT dedicated to headphone.

Sorry to set boundaries, but the DIY universe is expanding a bit more slowly than we would hope, yet, that it expands at all is a miracle in itself.

You'll of course have to keep your budget for parts in mind. But you've already got your feet wet with DIY so don't be intimidated by the more complex stuff, its really not that difficult, there are just more joints to make.
