basically I want something that can be used in a variety of places, I will be using these headphones not just in loud places but at home and in much quietier places.

Right now, I could really use a try on the ER-4 since everyone seems to be in love with it, but the Senn. HD 280 was my first choice before I asked any questions and many have suggested it as well. I guess now its a choice between the two.

I wouldn't go with the 280s, because they don't have nearly as much sound isolation.

Just order them both from headroom and return the one you like less. They have a wonderful return policy for situations just like this.

The etys attenuate sound a lot more than the HD280 to start with, plus you can wear earmuffs over them if they still don't attenuate enough--not an option with the HD280.
