I want to know, what is everyone's dream portable setup? For both strict and loose definitions of portable....

Strict: Panasonic SL-CT470, Etymotic ER4P

Loose: Japanese Panasonic SL-CT570, Headroom Cosmic, Etymotic ER4S with custom ear molds, Headroom Traveller Bag

Well, you just summed my choices up quite nicely already.

portability: my current Sharp mdp + ety4p

loose: I'd want to keep this as portable as possible while still maintaining hi-fi sound, so...p-mdp, (whatever sounds best, that's not a Sony...got sony-phobia :p) + Porta-Corda (

) + GoodHeadphones for a hotelroom kinda portable setup, or with Eties for on the move.

Strict: Sony D-777, MDR-E484 (I can't stand Ety's on the move)

Strict, not mobile: D-777, ER4P's

Slightly less strict, not mobile: Denon DCP-150, ER4P's (According to Dan Pumphrey, the ER4S's are happier with WATTS of power in reserve)

Loose, outside noise not an issue, mobile: Japanese Panasonic SL-CT570, Cal Gamma DAC, Headroom Cosmic, Grado RS-1 (Flat pads)

Loose, outside noise not an issue, immobile: Denon DCP-150, (Cal Gamma, Headroom Cosmic), Grado RS-1

Loose, outside noise an issue, immobile: Denon DCP-150, (Cal Gamma, Headroom Cosmic), ER4P/S

Loose, outise noise an issue, mobile: Japanese Panasonic SL-CT570, Cal Gamma DAC, Headroom Cosmic, Sony MDR-CD1700 || Sennheiser HD-25 || Beyerdynamic DT831

(...) - Optional

DAC/amp a must (?) for the DVD-PA65-based setups.

Criteria:
Strict: Earbuds + CDP only.
Loose: Anything that can run off of 24 volts or less DC, or has internal batteries is allowed.
Immobile: Player/transport need not have anti-skip
Mobile: Player/transport must have 10 seconds anti-skip minimum. (SL-CT780 is thus excluded, as it has no anti-skip for digital out)

Either a Personal Jukebox or Treo jukebox (both are HD players) with a 20 gig harddrive (not the standard 6.4 gig) and a pair of ER4S's. Maybe throw in a portable amp if they can't serve the etys justice.

I'd have to agree with Neruda on the player... the Treo looks interesting...

Dream: Treo + Stax SR-001 MK2 electrostatic portable system

Less Dreamy: Treo + Corda Portable (hopefully) + Etymotic ER4s

More Realistic: Current pcdp, Sony D-EJ815 + Current portable EX70 + one of Apheard's DIY amps

Crazy: Disel Fuel generator + Cart + Orpheus + Really expensive cdp

Now if only there were portable d/a convertors (I bet there are!)

Mine is:

Strict: My current Sony D-EJ721 + (listed in decreasing order of MY preference) Sony MDR-E888LP || Sony MDR-EX70LP || Sony MDR-ED268LP || Grado SR-60 || Koss Porta Pro

Looser: D-EJ721 + Headroom Total Airhead + Etymotic ER-4S and/or AKG K501 + Airbag

Loosest: D-EJ721 + Headroom "New" Cosmic + Sennheiser HD600 + ER-4S + Traveler Bag

You could just stick some wheels under the Stax factory and I'd be happy.

1) Stax SR-001 is about $350 or so in Japan. Thus, it's not nearly a dream setup, considering a Porta-Corda + Ety's will cost roughly the same amount.

2) There are portable D/A converters - the Cal Gamma runs on 12 volts DC, all you need is a gel cell, or an AA-based battery pack to feed it.

3) I wouldn't mind the SR-001's myself. :p

You actually carry that some thousands of dollars worth of equipment like that? man......
