OK -

For Hifi, based on my experience and assuming one is buying new, I'd go with high efficiency speakers, tubed integrated amp, and tubed or SS CDP. As far as brands & $$, the choices that first come to mind are:

Speakers: Omega Super 5s @ USD 950, Omega Deep Hemp Cub @ USD 950;
Amplifier: Almarro A205 mk II @ USD 750;
CDP: Consonance 120 Linear @ USD 950.
Stands / Cables / Interconnects / Etc @ USD 300.

Total system cost w/ sub: USD 3.9K
Total system cost w/o sub: USD 3.0

When funds permit, some modding / tube rolling of the Almarro @ approx USD 400 and you'd be doin' fine for a long time.

For Headphone rig my 1st choices would be what's in my home office . . .

Yamamoto HA-02 @ USD 995;
ATH-W1000 @ USD 350;
Eastern Electric Minimax @ USD 900;
Audioquest Interconnects @ USD 100

Total system cost: USD 2,345

With another $100 or for a pair of Amperex 6922s for the EE Minimax, one would, IMO, be set for quite a while.

Cheers,
Garry

No offence to the OP, but: Aaww, are these kind of threads really apropriate to HIGH END forum?

Remember that you asked for personal opinions ("..system that you would consider hifi?"). This is GarryH's opinion, while others may have another opinion.

I don't think it belong in here either. Maybe in the "General" forum or something?

I don't see what's wrong with this thread. It would be nice to get a basis on what sort of gear is fit for discussion in such a forum. "High End" seems a pretty vague term to me.

It did originally say "What would represent the cheapest entry into hifi?". At least thats the reason why I though it were misplaced.
Since this is is the High-End forum, and not "just" the hifi one...
