What was the first pair of headphones you ever owned?

My first ones were the no-name earbuds that came with my Rio S30 (got MX300's with my iMP-550, but the cord was too short so I stored them until a day or two ago). First headphones I bought were a pair of Sony clip-on headphones with a bass port thingamajig ($30). I remember EQing the hell out of them to the point where the bass was unbelievably bloated, then turning the volume all the way up for a casual walk to school and back. Then I got my SR-60's, and all was well...

yeah i think those are what i had, they look very similar. I think i may have used a red pair also. I had some that were more square shaped, the foams were more square. Did anyone make a really good pair of that style?

my first headphones were some crappy ones that came with my sharp cassette walkman in the mid 80's. then in the early 90's, i got my first set of V6. those blew me away coming out of my d25. it wasn't until i discovered head-fi last year that i bought my first set of "audiophile" cans, hd580's.

EJ Korvette (anybody remember them?) carried a house brand called XAM. The headphones looked like a Pioneer, with large white earcups. I purchased a pair in 1969, and, like all my other headphones, I still have them.

I got a pair of Koss Pro 4AA in about 1972 and then around '76 or so I got a pair of Senn HD-414 that I still own and use.

My first headphones were a horrendously expensive ($30) pair of Sennheiser HD414's that I talked my father into buying me instead of the $17.95 POS that he wanted to treat me to from The Shack. That was 1970, I believe. The cable gave me serious problems, went through 2 or 3 of them before I gave up on Sennheiser until recently.

Other than various cheap Sony earbuds and walkman supplied headphones, my first serious headphones were the Koss Pro/4X Plus sealed headphones. I had them from about 1991 until I got my Grado SR60s a couple of years ago. The Koss had good isolation and a warm sound that I thought sounded good until the vinyl earpads stiffened up from age, which made them sound tinny. I was able to A/B the Koss and the Grado together and it was no comparison - the 60s blew away the Koss in terms of sound quality - even if the Koss had fresh earpads they would have been no match for the Grados. The Koss were more comfortable and had better isolation, though - but you'd have really sweaty ears after half-an-hour's listening.

The 1st pair I got besides the earbuds that came with various cassette/CD players was a cheap Sony behind the neck, which I thought sounded pretty good until I discovered head-fi and bought a pair of SR60's

.

BTW, I think I own the worst earbuds ever, both comfortwise and soundwise : a pair that came with a Sony CD player a few years ago. They're just too large and painful to fit and saty in a normal ear and even the earbuds that came with a $20 Aiwa cassette player several years before sounded wayyy better.

ignoring 'stock' earphones/headphones, the very first pair of 'quality' headphones i purchased was the sennheiser px200.

Hi,

My first pair were Koss, I think Pro 4a. They were great except they were so heavy my neck ached after a short time from the weight. They also made my ears run/sweat after a couple of hours.

Next pair were some Sens, can't remember the model but they had yellow foam pads and took a lot of power to drive. However they were very light and the sound was very transparent, for those days.

Cheers

John
