I was just wondering how loud (or not loud) I listen to my music. I've always thought I don't listen loudly as i've never turned any amp past the 9 o'clock when the SR-71 goes to ~ 5 o'clock!!

I'll presume here that everybody uses the line-out

(is there much variance in the powers of line-outs seeing as they are not amplified).

Please state, what type of phones (and impedance?), volume and gain type, and source if you like.

So for me:

Headphones: ER4S (100 ohms)
SR-71 (stock gain): ~ 8 o'clock
Source: Line out iAudio M3

ER4S are not meant to be easy to drive at 100 ohms and if I listen to ~ 8 o'clock now when I receive my UE10 whether it'll be too loud from the off!

nad c542
sr-71
hd650 (stock)

don't go past 7-8ish or I'll blow my ears out.

Before this thread takes off, where is your volume knob set to first because my volume knob is set below the 1st line mark at lowest volume setting, it's actually pointing at the "S" where you you the model number SR-71. At this setting mark I have my volume at about 9-10 o'clock

iPod -line-out

Yeah, my volume knob starts off below the first mark, pointing to around the S like yours. Knowing the build quality of this fine amp i'd hazard a guess that they all start at the same point.

Kirosia / Kshaft. Wow, that's hell of a difference in volumes..

7-8 o'clock/3 o'clock? I bet this has something to do with line-out voume differences?

SR71
Sensa 2XS
Sony HD1 lineout

Volume pot stays pretty much at 9 o'clock position +/- 1

OMG, you'll be hearing from my lawyer, because I can't hear now, just tried it at 2-3 and it's perforated my eardrums at that level. Are you serious?

With my UE-10's its at about 9-11 o'clock, but when I use my HD-650>Zu combo, it is up around 1-3 o'clock.

Probably. The nad (and most other fullsize decks) has a fairly loud line out. Nonetheless, I still listen to what most people consider low volume.

I wonder if there's a gain setting issue here...I got mine from Todd too.

IRiver IMP-400
SR-71
Cardas 1 foot cable (nitrogen?? not nitrogen??)
ER4S

Usually between 10 and 2. That reminds me of driver's ed.
