Hard to argue that the Orpheus reign supreme, although with so few pairs produced I wonder how many people have heard them, truly it is quite an experience completely worth it. They were one of the first audiophile headphones I heard since the father of a friend has them (he's had them since I was in elementary school in the nineties), and I kind of curse that moment since they spoiled me all headphones (HD595,AD700,HD6x0,K701 among others) except for the HD800 and a couple more (which I have yet to compare directly to the Orpheus).

Sub 1K the best Senns are the HD6x0, depending on the quantity of bass you are looking you could prefer either (HD650 are bassier and with less trebble, while the HD600 are a tad brighter than neutral IMO), and since I don't want to repeat what Uncle Erik said, I think pretty much what he said.

In that case I don't want to try the Orpheus

Unless previously you have won the lottery or received a huge sum of money from an inheritance or something

Although I suspect there are other headphones that if heard at the beginning of the audiophiles journey can be such party-poopers for the mid tier headphones... it is not that some are not (very) enjoyable and great value, but you cannot get out of your head that the sky goes still higher.... aka upgraditis... at least finally I have no desire to upgrade for a long time

i heard when you hear the orpheus head on it roars with its god thunder amps you'll pee your pants while crying at the same time very awesome indeed a true story

Just imagine being a PX200 (very happy) user... and then hearing the legendary Orpheus that begins to impress you by how magnificent it looks, the tubes and wood and big size, and then hearing Dark Side of the Moon... yeah, not far from what you said

screw the PX200, , ,  imagine an inexperienced audio lover going from crappy 4 dollar skullcandy earbuds to Orpheus with maxed amping/sourcing as money can buy.

The look on their face would be absolutely priceless.

APS v3 recabled HD600's for me. They don't have the cloudiness that I disliked on the HD650.

I use the same thing and love it.

@ desktophifi

I have heard the HD650 extensively with an array of quality amps and found them too colored for my tastes. HD600 hits all the numbers for me, with less color, but still enough to be the signature I've come to love.

I would imagine something like this would happen:

(I was looking for a martian exploding head from Mars Attack gif, but couldn't find it)

Welcome to head-fi, sorry about your wallet.

Haha, I so know how true that motto is... I am 15, I got myself taught a lesson by my grandfather (if that makes sense) about why I shouldn't be spending $325 on headphones. I am not listening to him though. I put half my work paycheck in the bank. Good enough.

But, to answer his question, when I had my Denon d5000's, they performed excellent with house music, rock music, and trance. I look for bass in dance, trance, electronic music over the little details in the music.

IMHO, Senn´s HD 25 are really neutral (mine are HD25 C-II, coiled 3m cable), as ´phones primary for audio monitor...

BUT: You had to mentioned trance, and this weekend I visit one music festival, here in Slovakia (Topfest 2010), and here it comes...on dance stage, there were practicaly just one and only heaphones, used by DJ´s (guys from Kosheen, e.g.), Senn´s HD 25, of course...so, they seems to be good even for people, which are producing ELECTRO music....

So I don't want to buy the like, 600$ sennheiser, but I want the best headphones. Which one/s are they? I've listened to the HD 448s, and the HD 555 for about 3 minutes (I posted a question about that if you could help), and I am wondering what the best model is. I know they say a whole bunch of technical stuff on their website, but I didn't see anything for listening to trance :P

Another vote for hd 25 1 but not because they neutral which are not IMO. They are very well balanced with tight, fast, unbelievable punchy bass ,forward mids, darker signature which result in enjoying your groove more than searching faults in your collection. I'm using this 'phone for 7 years and considering their durability, they will be in my testament
