Last night I ripped a bunch of music (all 9 Beethoven Symphonies) at 192kb AAC.

I had them in 160kb, but decided to see if 192 would make much of a difference. Honestly, I really can't tell a difference.

So that begs the question: what do you rip your music at and can you really, really tell a difference?

By the way here's some more info"

256VBR AAC, through iTunes.

I record vinyl albums in 24/96, while listening to them. There is a degradation going from wav to AAC, more congested and the sound is not as lively as it used to be.

I used to find it hard to differentiate 128 and 256 AAC, but since I upgraded my headphones, I find 128 too cold and congested for my tastes.

I use DBPA CD Ripper.

Simultaneously encode to FLAC and V2 lame.

Currently I don't make use of the FLAC files for day to day playback. I figure one day I will be, though.

Is this techno-fundamentalism?

FLAC is my favorite.

When I can't use FLAC, I go with Ogg Vorbis or mp3, both at ~256k VBR.

Anything below 192k sounds like poop.

The differences are very subtle as you increase the bit rate. I usually use Lame at V0, which usually results in average bit rates in the upper 200's. I think I would have a very hard time distinguishing those files from the original CD or lossless files, even on my $800 set of speakers. Mp3's at 128 I can usually distinguish as lower quality.

i'm wondering if i would be able to tell the difference between 192 and 256...

lossless is tempting, but i dont' think i have enough space on the ol iphone...(i have an 8gig 1st gen). I think i'll rerip at 256 if/when 32gig iPhone comes out...

How much size difference is there between standard Windows Media Player rip and 192-256 Ogg Vorbis? I'm wondering because I currently have standard WMP rip for my D2, I tried FLAC but not enough room for all my music. I have near 650 songs and the majority of them are over 5 and 6 minutes, I have couple 20 minute songs too. Just curious.

Depends on what the standard wma bitrate is (I think it's128 kbps but I might be wrong)
Assuming the standard wma bitrate is 128 kbps...
A "192 kbps" (probably actually -q 6) ogg rip would be about 1.5x the size and a "256 kbps" (probably actually -q 8) ogg rip would be about double the size.

Oh, and I rip to FLAC and convert to -q5 ogg vorbis for portable use.

Anything between 2Kbps and 1411Kbps, aka VBR.
Apple Lossless to be specific.
