What Military Branch Are/Were You In?

Well, my husband was in the army, but so were most guys here. You either have to do the army, or some kind of social service. His brother elected the social service and worked in an mental institution.

I'm not sure what rank he was when he left, but he ended with metals for running and metals for shooting, and was nominated for the Finnish version of OSC.

He chose not to do it and get out instead, and it's still a bit of a family feud. His family wanted him to go on.

He still doesn't understand why instructors at US boot camps are so rude.

edit - I forgot the rest of the family..

My grandfather retired a Commander in the Navy
My other Grandfather ..I'm not sure what he was, but he was in the Navy too
My Uncle was hmm.. he may have retired as Admiral in the Coast Guard.
His son, my first cousin, is also in the Coast Guard, I beleive he recently got command of his first ship.
My other first cousin is in the Air Force Reserves hoping he's not shipped out again for the third time in 6 months.

Why the hell would someone lie about being in the military? I can't think of anyone lame enough to do such a dumb thing. And no, coast guard doesn't count.

Air Force dudes have it made, they have a bunch of "specialists" per bird instead one guy doing all the work. Also, their quality of life is way higher than any of the other services, if you've ever been to bases of different services, you'll quickly notice how much better the AF ones are.

I dunno, a kid from my high school wanted to go to West Point, but he couldn't do enough push ups. So he went to the Coast Guard Academy instead.

I was in the navy from 1968-1975.

Can't say what I did. I would have to shoot you.

How does one get into the special forces (such as navy seals, green berets, etc.)? do you have to be a marine and get noticed, and then go through special training? i saw part of a documentary on seal training once... that looked pretty intense. unfortunately i didn't see how the whole process of being selected for it occurs (or is it open try-outs?)

SSGT in the USAF 1982-1990.
Aircraft Fuel Systems specialist. (No I didn't fill em, I fixed them)
Spent 8 years crawling through fuel tanks, fixing leaks, changing pumps, valves, fuel quantity probes, bladder cells. Inhaling toxic fumes and chemicals the whole time. Nasty, nasty job.
Probably explains why I am the way I am now.

Navy. 24 days start to finish. Short and sweet enlistment. I guess I wasn't what they were looking for.

Army. Sergeant. 5 years, 9 months, 24 days. Met some great people.

Let's see I was in Korea '78 - '79 and '82 - '83. Between my ROK tours there was Ft Bragg, NC and Redstone Arsenal, AL.

Well, I signed the enlistment paperwork for the Navy back in September of last year but am not going to boot camp until early March this year. I'm going into the Nuclear Field. Yep, I'm a geek all the way around
