That is a hard question. It takes some items to make others sound good. I would have to say either my Victor/JVC HP DX1000s or the xdac(due to the fact that my transport is just an old sony cd player so the improvement with it was immense.) Without the amp though, the DX1000s wouldn't be what they are. I hope to change the choices when my next and most expensive item is ready though-a Zana Deux amplifier due any day now. I previewed it at a local meet and was blown away so i am keeping my fingers crossed. But the question is the "Best Buy" huh, so maybe the lowly PX-100s, my first jump in which were only $50. Good question for us all!
I'd have to say that I have two "best" buys. I picked up a b-stock corda 2move for $160 and a pair of new westone 3's for $280 through ebay w/ live cashback.
Equipment audiophilia aside, individual music aside, spinning LPs is an end unto itself in terms of satisfaction and enjoyment. And th ebest things should always be ends in themselves.
Audio Technica A700s.. I've since upgraded, but I used the A700s a couple hours everyday for 2 1/2 years, and they only set me back $125. Definitely the best bang-for-the-buck purchase I've ever made..
