What is the Saddest song ever written?

If anyone hasn't heard them yet, I also recommend Sigur Ros for sad music.

The latest cd Takk... is a great example. The intro track and Milano are the very "uplifting in a sad way" kind of songs, much like My Weakness by Moby is.

People tend to either think Sigur Ros is brilliant or the lamest most pretentious band in existence, very polarizing. I love them, and other Icelandic groups(Bjork, Mum)

I'm going to say "The Lighthouse's Tale" by Nickel Creek. Always brings a tear to my eye...

Quote:

Then on the next day, my keeper found her washed up on the sand.
He kissed her cold face, that they'd be together soon he'd swore.

I saw him crying, watched as he buried her in the sand.
And then he climbed my tower, and off of the edge of me he ran.

Asleep - The Smiths
Wings For Marie (Part 1) / 10,000 Days (Part 2) - Tool <- especially if you know the backstory to these songs.

Cat Power - Colors and the Kids

Pretty much everything off of Moon Pix gets to me like little else in music does.

Beethoven - Piano Sonata op. 57 Appassionata, second movement.

I'm not sure if anyone agrees with me on the sadness part, though, since I've never heard anyone refer to it as such (or even talk about it. Beats me).

Also op. 111's 2nd movement is a contender for me.

Aozora from the Air OST is another one.

At the moment, nothing makes me more sad than listening to Craig Minowa sing about his dead 2 year old son. Being a first time father of a 1 year old- "I Took You For Granted" nearly choked me up the first time I heard it. The samples of his sons voice- who sounds very much like my own- is a bit too much to handle. Cloud Cult is great by the way.

Any number of Iris Dement songs could qualify. At the moment, the one that comes to mind as the saddest is "You've Done Nothing Wrong". Loss and forgiveness, that's a tough combination (throw in a bit of guilt and you could found a religion on it).

An excerpt:

...Well, you said that you were sorry,
And you'd take all the blame.
But we both shared the gamble,
So let's both share the pain.
Like a breeze that blew across us,
Love just moved along.
And just because I'm hurting,
That don't mean that you've done something wrong...

If the Songs of Iris doesn't do it for you, I'd suggest listening to a sung version of Robert Burns' "Ye Bonnie Banks and Braes". I once heard a recording of a live performance by Dougie MacLean that would bring a tear to any eye.

Eric Clapton- Tears In Heaven

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but it is about Clapton's son who fell out of a window to his death. You can hear his heart break on the bridge on the Unplugged Album.

Edit: Lol, mentioned like third post in. Well put me down for another vote.

The album Asleep in the Back by Elbow, but in particular the song Powder Blue

Your eyes are just like black spiders
Your hair and dress in ribbons. Babycakes.
In despair or incoherent. Nothing in between
China white, my bride tonight
Smiling on the tiles

Bring that minute back
We never get so close as when the sunward flight begins
I share it all with you
Powder blue

Stumble through the crowds together
They're trying to ignore us. That's o.k.
I'm proud to be the one you hold when the shakes begin
Sallow skinned, starry eyed, blessed In our sin

Bring that minute back
We never get so close to death
Makes you so alive
I share it all with you
Powder blue

The first time I heard this song I stopped everything I was doing and just listened and actually teared up a little. Everytime I listen to this song I still get goosebumps.

Without giving this a great deal of thought, the very first song that popped into my head was "Black Orchid" by Blue October.

Have you ever been so lonely?
There's no one there to hold
Just pull me in or disown me
And then climb inside
My arms are open wide
Have a look inside

And it is not that I am scared to learn
Just why I'm empty inside
Just hold my hand to show some concern
If I live or die
My eyes are open wide
Help me look inside

I hear the water drip from the faucet
It's sweetly falling in tune
I'm gently closing the closet
And I fall to the floor
Crawl to my room
The thought of ending it soon
Just let me sleep in my room

Hear me cry
Cry
Cry
I hear a knock at the front door
Don't come in...
I try to look at you but I can't stop shaking
Leave me alone, just go away
Mother, I'm so scared
I'm so scared

An empty bed, but all of my sheets are gone
They're wrapped around me and you
And all is quiet but the drop of my gun
Cause I, I want to belong
To someone
But maybe life's not for everyone
