K's Choice - Not an addict.

No song has every affected me this way, I heard it when I was still in my college "party phase" and I was getting drunk 3 days a week(sometimes more).

One day I was hung over and I heard this song, it really moved me

OK - Martin Sexton has three worthy entries - Where Did I Go Wrong and Golden Road, from Wonder Bar, and the all-time king, Way I Am from The American. If you haven't checked Martin out, he's amazing, simply amazing, and about the most unpretentious singer and songwriter out there. Breathtaking.

The one I have is conducted by Andras Ligeti and performed by the Budapest Philharmonic from a “Top 10 Of Classical Music - Romantic” LaserLight CD. There is a sample of it if you go down to the tracks. It is track number 3. It is a 5:05 track but you can download a one-minute sample on Amazon:

I don’t know who the violinist is but in it’s entirety it is incredibly moving.

I have heard another version that was not moving at all: http://www.howtofaq.com/faqNO80VQ5WUPSC.php This second mp3 is a free download but it has a violinist that plays it pretty dry. So I actually recommend that you avoid this second download and try to listen to the first one that is on Amazon.

Good pick! My vote is for a few songs on the Fluke soundtrack. That movie has a great musical score and is VERY sad.

The saddest song ever written is the one that speaks to you and reflects your own mistakes and regrets back at you in a time of sorrow

U2 - One (about the death of Bono's mother)
U2 - Bad (what's life about?)

Kinda hard to describe what's a sad song. Is it the lyrics? Is it the melody? Is it the voice?

Some others:

Elvis Presley - In the Ghetto
Joan Baez - Blowin' in the wind

Probably not mentioned...but along the choral music lines I find Prayer of the Children to be immensely sad and depressing. Best arranged (imo) for all male choirs by Klouse. My choir brought the audience to complete silence by the end of the song, and you could hear muffled sobs. An absolutely moving piece of literature.

Lyrics follow:

Can you hear the prayer of the children
on bended knee, in the shadow of an unknown room?
Empty eyes with no more tears to cry,
turning heavenward toward the light.

Cryin' Jesus help me to see the mornin' light of one more day,
but if I should die before I wake,
I pray my soul to take.

Can you feel the hearts of the children
aching for home, for something of their very own?
Reaching hands with nothing to hold on to,
but hope for a better day, a better day.

Cryin' Jesus help me to feel the love again in my own land,
but if unknown roads lead away from home,
give me loving arms, away from harm.

Can you hear the voice of the children
softly pleading for silence in their shattered world?
Angry guns preach a gospel full of hate,
blood of the innocent on their hands.

Cryin' Jesus help me to feel the sun again upon my face.
For when darkness clears, I know you're near,
bringing peace again.

Da-li cu-je te sve dje-cje mol-it-ve?
Can you hear the prayer of the children?
