What is the first LP/CD you bought with your own $

First CD was Jars of Clay, their first album, in 1995. First LP was The Microphones - The Glow Pt 2, in 2001. I didn't get a vinyl rig till years later but it hung on my wall as some kind of ancient relic with cool artwork.

My first CD was a terribly important landmark in my life as a music listener, here's why...

I was a smart kid, but definitely a bit introspective, and as a result, a bit of an outsider. While being part of the herd wasn't my top priority, I did feel some gravity towards the idea of sharing common interest with my fellow students and the few close friends I had.

That is why, when I was given that gift certificate for Christmas that year, things couldn't have been more perilous. You see, New Kids on the Block had just exploded onto the scene as the hip and cool thing of then. All the kids my age were listening to it.

I recall being in HMV, finding the New Kids disc immediately as it was displayed prominently in the store, and wandering around with it in my clutches while perusing other discs.

I stopped.

Here was this section of music, tucked into the back, that one of my friend's older brothers couldn't shut up about; metal. I perused through the discs on display, instantly forming a stronger connection with the beautifully disturbed cover artwork until I found it; Sepultura - Chaos A.D.

I stood there with either disc in hand, weighing the merits of one versus the other - after all, I hadn't even heard this Sepultura business before.

The boy band never made it out of the store, and that disc marked the stepping stone for my journey into the world of metal, rock, electronic, jazz, electronic, classical and what I've come to believe is damn good music.

First LP was Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil. I was all of about 8 years old...I was with my grandmother and I remember going up to the salesperson at the music store (back when music stores still existed) and saying..."I am looking for the Crue"...The salesguy had no freaking clue what I was talking about...nor did I really; I just knew that my best friend's older brother was always rockin' to ""the crue"...between him and another salesguy, they figured it our for me

The first CD I ever bought was Def Leppard's Hysteria.

A bit dated, but I think it's still one of the best sounding and engineered CD's I own.

Not the first (I can't remember what exactly was first), but certainly one of the older ones and quite possibly the most important album I ever bought: Selected Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin.

Ry Cooder's OST for Crossroads.....still pop it in for a listen now and then, all these years later. I still remember getting flack from the friends, not exactly what the rest of my 14 year old peeps were listening to back in the day.

PinkFloyd - Another Brick in the Wall
Ted Nugent- Wango Tango

both 45rpm singles

....the next day I bought two LPs:
ELO - A New World Record
Beatles - Abbey Road

I was in 3rd or 4th grade (8-9yrs old) and rode my bike to the record store, about two miles from home, then went and blew my change playing pinball at "Walker's Pinball Palace."

The Moody Blues' Days of Future Past. $8 sometime in the early 90s at Best Buy. I was actually about to get a Greatest Hits, and my dad told me I'd be better off with this one.

Since the, I've only bought a single hits CD, 'cause it was cheap enough to be a sampler for me (The Very Beast of Dio). Oddly enough, while I've got early Rainbow and late Black Sabbath, I still haven't bothered to pick up an actual Dio album

I can't remember exactly which was the first CD I bought...

but I remember Daft Punk and Prodigy being early stuff in my collection.

the first LP was The Seeds - Evil Hoodoo, that I got at a record fair. I even didn't have a turntable at that time, but later I got my fathers turntable so I could play this goodie.
